Tv Documentary On Sex Trafficking In Thailand Delves Into The Bangkok Underworld

The spotlight is on individuals caught in the Bangkok and Pattaya underworld. The size of the network involved is hard to gauge from this report, but the "Uzbek connection" is a slice of the local sex industry that has grown over the years, allegedly because rogue Army and police officers protect it.

What's changed from when Thai Police and Farang Police were busting Uzbek prostitutes in Pattaya, albeit with a somewhat different police arresting protocol?

PATTAYA VOLUNTEER POLICE INDULGE IN UZBEK STING OPERATION

Undercover Pattaya Tourist Police pretend to solicit sex from foreign women. Four women from Republic of Uzbekistan were arrested.

On the 22nd May 2007, at 02:30 am, Pol. Lt. Col. Withichart Luensukan, Tourist Police Inspector of Pattaya, and his team, planned an operation to nab Uzbek Prostitutes around the night time entertainment areas. The undercover Pattaya Tourist Police officers managed to arrest four ladies who were offering their services.

The foreign undercover officers made arrangements with the four Uzbek women for sexual services at the Pattaya Inn Hotel.

When the love making sessions were concluded, the prostitutes asked for 2,000 baht each.

The undercover representatives gave a total of 8,000 baht to the women, and the police placed them under arrest.

Some how I do not think these girls did not know what they were getting into. I am pretty sure they were "pros" before their arrival.

The real question is.............Who in the heck would want one of these girls after he saw a Thai Girl? Maybe a special hospital that does brain scans in the area is called for. ha ha

..and yet another one.

Is it really just Thailand where so many western men are like this, or other countries too?

In all the countries i have lived in, or visited, ive never heard of men like these guys!

--- Sorry..im off-topic. Im just shocked at what crawls up through the woodwork here.

I saw this on NGO 5 weeks ago in the USA. News must be slow in Thailand.

It's not news. It's a documentary, And yes, NatGeo has a different schedule around the globe. I'm surprised thats news to you. wink.png

...The Labour Ministry conceded on Tuesday that cases of trafficking are poorly handled because its five departments are not integrated. Officials are due to meet next week to discuss a master plan to combat trafficking in key sectors such as crews on fishing trawlers and migrant workers in Thailand in general...

How many decades have they had to get their departments in contact with each other???

Shear ineptitude.

Stayed two nights at Grace Hotel,

only because it was right next to Bumrungrad Hospital and I needed a recovery place.

Never again, this was just a horrible place to visit let alone stay at, the lobby made you

feel threatened and people looked at you suspiciously. I guess they thought I was a spy

for US gov. or something. I needed a massage and went to the basement thinking it was a spa,

no. it was the most horrible 'Fishbowl' in all of Thailand. Turned around and went upstairs.

Got healthy post operation, and left.

Can't drive by on Suk 3 and see the working girl line up in the parking lot and not shudder.

Good for NatGeo to run this.

One thing for certain - it has become far worse in the last year with the influx of cross trade between the Pattaya/Ukraine contingent. It certainly has Eastern European goods and there is no shortage of robed and African individuals who take advantage of them. Disgusting and putrid are not even words that qualify it. Certainly a street and a venue to avoid especially as there seems to be no Thai police even game to touch it.

This was 4 years ago and turned my stomach then.

Drove past in taxis a few times in May... worse street scene for sure.

Sad they let this go on...The whole of Sukhumvit, Soi 3 and now even soi 4 has many of Eastern European prostitutes. It has grown massively since all the Arabs moved into Soi 4 hotels etc. As most cater for them. If you walk from Asoke to Soi 3 at around midnight to 2 am the streets have many Africans and Eastern European girls. The whole demograhics of this area has changed. It now has an edge at night, feels slightly unsafe and some very questionable people. African pimps, young Eaastern European men who runs girl. One buidling my friend lives in in soi 4, Omni Tower seems to caters for groups of Eastern European prostitutes. The big fat lady pimps and young guys who run the girls sit outside openly and are always there when I meet my buddy. It is so obvious you would have to be an idiot not to realise what is going on. So why they are not arrested I do not know. Sad to see it happening as it just ruins the area, the crime goes up, and socially it looks horrible. I feel sorry for anyone who lives around there.

This is not news...

This area has been populated by African and Arab traders for decades; but unfortunately for them the vast majority of Asian service ladies never wanted to cater for them.

"This area has been populated by African" - for decades, yes, but now it seems to spread like .................. in one year, even until Asoke Montri

At least they were good enough to pay them before arresting them. I mean they did "conclude" the love making sessions so it's only fair.

so easy to get a one's moral high horse and miss positive things.

Am I the only one who read this part of the article.

"Only now, with the US reportedly on the verge of downgrading Thailand to Tier-3 status, warranting economic sanctions, because of the lack of concerted action against trafficking, does it appear that the government might do something."

Yes there is big big problem here in Thailand. But as some posters pointed out they are not all slaves some do it for the easy money. Some were pro's before coming here but the money was not that good where they come from. I am not condoning the industry in any way. Nor am I looking at it from my seat on my high horse of morality. And I am fully aware that some of the girls in the industry are in it because it is far and away better than what they had.

Perhaps now with the threat from the states and the Government's desperate attempt to tell the world no problem with floods now we have fixed the problem we might see some positive action taken to stop the inhumanity of the way some of the girls are handled.

"to stop the inhumanity of the way some of the girls are handled" and the backgrounds how they (Thai women) are forced to come to "work" as they name it, but this (again), certainly is not a topic to discuss in a forum unfortunately. mfr_closed1.gif (from my part)

The Grace hotel used to be a spot where they expected only Arabs, you could go undercover as a Westerner, nobody would expect you in the coffee shop. Anywhere in the world there is sex trafficking. The problem of Thailand is that it is not as sleazy and criminal as for instance in the US.

Why on earth would an important topic regarding possible human trafficing and abuse of human rights, happening in the country we choose to live in, NOT be a topic to discuss in a Thailand -related forum...??? (Or ANY forum for that matter, to be honest)

Too funny. Nothing being mentioned about the corruption that supports human trafficking. I'm watching this now.

To be honest eek, what I was pointing at is a local (Thai) matter and not pointing at human traficking and secondly knowing the content of some reactions in a forum I'm not in the mood to start with this. Again, it's how, local women, not having any "experience" before, are landing in this "business".

From the documentary (i took this quote because it shows the issues involved even if someone CHOOSES to be a prositute) : "A recruiter discovered she was divorced, with a young baby, and offered her a job in Bangkok as an escort, desperate Anna accepted. "I thought, I will arrive here and if i dont like it, i can go back home. So i wanted to go back home, but she told me, you have to work." They dont know that they will be locked up in the day. They dont know that they wont be able to say no to which sex acts are required of them. They dont know they will be beaten. They dont know they could be murdered. They dont know they can be gang-raped. They dont know really, what they will be getting into." "

in the horrific World of human trafficking I find this Documentary a joke?..it is more like a promotional video.

Bottom line CORRUPTION of Thai officials is why the growth is happening here.

WHY are the girls not arrested by immigration for not having passports and then deported...if this happens often enough the Uzbek's will soon get the message

WHY are the corrupt Thai Police etc not arrested and shammed...as the special unit guy said we want Thailand to be clean...LOL they are all in it for the money ..parasites the lot of em sick.gif

It was due to the high moral fiber of the Farang Police Volunteers and Thai police.

Lots of times they even don't have a "recruiter", but are informed by acquitances or (girl)"friends" and "going back home" is often impossible by the lack of money................. It's becoming a vicious circle then.

Did someone notice: the docu is from 2008 or so ??

Where do you see this? All i can see is that the first airing of this documentary is recently.

Likely the undercover work and filming was done some time ago (although 4 years ago would be a lot).

Would just like to know where it shows this is from 2008.

Two points here:

1. Most of the girls know that are being hired as prostitutes, but the conditions of employment are not what they expect.

2. Thailand is the centre for sex traffickers because of it`s lax Immigration policies where anyone can just walk in and out virtually unchallenged with no questions asked.

Clamping down on the forever tourists at the borders would make these criminals look elsewhere and cut down a lot of this crime.

What do they mean ' allegedly rogue Army and Police Officers protect it'.

Of course they do, yet again it is corruption, corruption and more corruption.

It is the same all over Thailand, if you have money you can get away with anything even murder.

It will never ever change because it starts from the top.

So everyone here is worked up that a bunch of European hoes are in a hoe area selling what they sell to Africans and Arabs. Other than skin color how is any of this different than what goes on in pattaya, phuket, pat pong, or any other place for whores in the country. Why hate now?

In Australia they used to automatically deport women found to be prostitutes who had been sponsored (trafficked) e.g. by by way of a tourist/student visa. They were met at the airport & passports kept by the traffickers. The policy was changed and the women given protection in order to identify the "sponsors" for criminal prosecution. So in summary better not to deport, if the women will co-operate, until the justice system has been able to utilise the intelligence. Yes I know TIT, but maybe the Thai authorities will eventually get serious about human trafficking under pressure from the likes of the USA due to the proposed economic sanctions for non compliance.

Totally agree. I live in Soi 11 and the Middle Eastern population has increased dramatically one condo at a time. Only a year ago there were very few, now they make up over 50% I would say.

There are some families and people here for work etc, but judging by the number loitering around the streets most are not.

One has to keep in mind that the Middle Eastern scum in the area are just replacing the Western scum, I guess we just notice them more because they look different to us.
