True Docsis 10Mb/1Mb Connection With Linksys Wrt54Gl Router

I am about to move to a new house. The area has just got DOCSIS and I have asked my new landlord to get the 10Mb/1Mb installed for me. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router with Tomato Firmware installed.

I have heard rumours that True have been monitoring multiple devices (probably only 2 at once, 1 being low usage web browsing only the other being a mid usage web/streaming user) and blocking them.

Does anybody have any real experience of using a router behind the supplied DOCSIS router? What tips/advice do people have about setting up the supplied router to act like a modem to my router?

Thanks for all your help. Useful advice that True is rubbish will be heeded, but ignored. At least True have English speaking representatives that I can technically bore into submission!

I used my Linksys WRT54G-TM DD-WRT as a repeater behind my True-provided 20Mb/2Mb Cisco & Thomson DOCSIS Wifi routers (I've had both, currently have the Thomson model) and the WRT54G worked fine. I've also hung on a US Robotics Wifi router onto the DOCSIS router....worked no problem....no blocking. In fact, when playing one day, I had both the Linksys and USR Wifi routers hooked to the Cisco DOCSIS Wifi router at the same time with all three blasting out a Wifi signal on a different channel....and I connected to each signal no problem....worked fine.

Rumors I expect you have read/heard.

Thanks pib. Positive stuff. Do you mind if I pm you with setup queries if it is not obvious (I am technically minded, but like my hair to stay on my head)?

Could I ask, what are the cost (running and installation) for this kind of set up. I presume there is no phone line required. Is speed the main advantage here?

It's internet via cable TV line. No phone line req'd; cable TV line is used. Speed, lower costs, and higher reliability over xDSL are the advantages. See below for a snapshot of TrueOnline xDSL (i.e., via phone line) and DOCSIS (i.e., via cable) speeds plans and costs.

Main disadvantage is the 'multi-drop bus' topology, where there is limited bandwidth in a given distribution area, and as users come on line (6PM-11PM), speed takes a big hit, whereas xDSL is a 'star' topology, at least back to the DSLAM, and speed is unaffected by local usage. At least that's what xDSL providers use as their sales pitch in the US, where DOCSIS cable actually predated xDSL availablilty in some areas..

Probably moot, because, at least for international sites, the bottleneck is in the ocean...

Something to look out for. Being that the area has only just received DOCSIS and has a very low density population it might not be an issue.....for now! Thanks for the heads up though.

About the True DOCSIS initial cost,

You no need to pay anything for installation. True had promotion now for free installation and Free Cable modem router with Wifi (Cisco brand. 4 ports LAN). Contract period is 1 year.

My sister in law house just install last Saturday. 7mbps Docsis

Also, True will give U 50% discount on monthly charge for 4 months if U can prove U migrate from other ISP. Just copy other ISP bill and submit to the saleperson who incharge your application.

I got my discount, My sister in law got her discount too. :)

Use DOCSIS 50Mb with a True-supplied Motorola modem only cos the crappy Thomson modem/router they initially installed couldn't be switched to bridge mode for use with my Linksys E4200.

I'm a fairly heavy bandwidth user and, yesterday, I noticed that my download speeds on Bittorrent were rather slow.

No probs - hooked up to StrongVPN and, BOOM, speeds flew up to 5MB/sec again.

You mention a "True supplied" Motorola modem. How did you get them to swap the Thomson for the Motorola?

You probably can't/won't unless the Motorola is one of the modems designated for the particular speed plan you are signed up for. They have different modems for different speed plans. I expect the Motorola modem is a DOCSIS 3.0/802.11n modem/Wifi router used for the higher speed plans...say starting around 30Mb. But for the 7-20Mb plans they will issue out a DOCSIS 2.0 modem/802.11g Wifi router. In some earlier ThaiVisa threads on True DOCSIS there are some posts which contain the link to the page showing the modems/routers issued out by speed plan, but even 6 months ago when I last looked at it the page was outdated in not showing all the various modems/routers issued based on the Thomson Wifi router I had and what some other posts indicated they had received from True. But hey, both my previous Cisco and Thomson Wifi routers issued to me (both DOCSIS 2.0/802.11g) had no problems in providing a strong Wifi signal throughout my two story concrete house...with the Wifi upstairs in the corner bedroom and my laptop downstairs on the other end of the house I could still pull 20Mb on my 20Mb plan (actually I pulled 21.4Mb since the plan magically changed a few months ago from providing 20.4Mb to 21.4MB...guess True just upped it's speed a little).

Here's a link to a ThaiVisa thread that has hundreds of posts in it about the True DOCSIS. Link

I told them I'd already spent 5,000THB on the Cisco/Linksys (which I had)

I just asked for a modem that could be used in bridge mode - the Motorola was the only alternative to the Thomson modem/router.

Thanks for that Post, however it is a bit complicated so I will just ask, maybe you can explain?

I have strong vpn, I have TOT, I have Cisco Linksys E3000,

I have it set up and flashed from Sabai tech. I was trying to sell on CList since I don't need wifi in my Sukhumvit Condo.

Sabai has a Freedom package with tech support for a year. TOT is costing me about 2000 baht a month, and

I have Truevision HD cable.

What do you suggest I do? I think I have a one year contract with TOT,

If i can get fast Internet with ethernet, I would be willing to pay the penalty, will I be able to use the E3000 and have True set me up with Cable. Thanks for any advice on this matter.

Just because TrueVisions has cable TV in your area does not mean that cable is also equipped to carry the TrueOnline DOCSIS internet. You would need to contact True to confirm. From looking at the Sabai Tech website it just looks like they are a company that sells routers and offers support plans at additional cost. Since your Cisco E3000 works with whatever TOT xDSL modem you have, the E3000 should work with any modem/router provided by a Thai ISP such as TrueOnline DOCSIS or xDSL. Assuming your True cable system is also outfitted to provide True DOCSIS internet, personally I would switch in a heartbeat. When True installed cable TV/internet in my western Bangkok moobaan in June 2012 I know from talking to many neighbors most everybody switched to True....until True arrived the only choice we had for internet was TOT at a max xDSL speed of 6Mb. I expect you will have to pay a 1000-2000 baht penalty to cancel your TOT contract. I cancelled a TOT internet contract years back when I was only about two months into the contract and only paid a 1000 baht early cancellation fee...and when I switched to True I was on another TOT contract but already pass the 12 month contract point and didn't have to pay any cancellation fee...just the final month's bill.

Ya. I am more than happy to switch to True DOCSIS 7-8 months ago.

I used 3BB before. When come to peak time in the evening, the line will crawl to halt.

My sister in law TOT is worse. Speed test shown less than 1mbps. :S

Now she got 7mbps link at cheaper price.

But all this are depend on Location, Location, Location.

Big 10-4....Location, Location, Location can make a big difference....two people on the exact same internet plan (either xDSL or DOCSIS) living in different parts of the country/town/area can get major differences in speed, reliability, etc., due to the local circuits involved. The True cable TV/internet trunk line/circuits in my western Bangkok single family home moobaan are relatively new as it went operational in Jun 12...I can confidently say the reliability/up time since then has been 99.9% plus....it even stayed up when my moobaan had around a meter of water in the soi's for around a month during the flood late last year. My neighbors who were still on TOT xDSL at the time can't say the same....they are all on True DOCSIS (cable) internet now. Your results may vary.

Thanks for all this. I hope that this shared information is useful to somebody. Funny thing is that I got a call from my new landlord today apologising because TRUE came to the house and said that, on checking out the location properly, they CAN'T install DOCSIS. Funny.

Anyway, I'm going to be on either a 3BB or TRUE ADSL connection. I'll just have to work from there. I have been on a TRUE ADSL connection in Bangplad for 4 years and had relatively few problems. The past 2 years have been close to perfect.

We'll see. Thanks to all contributors. I hope this information is good to somebody else because the quality of info has been excellent. Shame I can't use it :/
