A Laptops Last Legs

Featured Replies

I boght this acbook laptop back in early 2006 and never thoght it wold last this any years. I thoght a hardware failre or a hard drive failre wold take its life bt it has been a different alady. As it trns ot, the and keys on the keyboard have stopped working. This is apparently a coon failre ode with older acbooks. This is aking it qite difficlt to post on fors, and even checking into y bank acconts cases e to se qite a bit of copy and pasting. Sigh..... It has been sch a good achine, driving y hoe sond syste 18 hors a day, and it connecting e to the world. A wondering if I shold break down and by a new achine or st by a new keyboard. I gess I shold not coplain as getting six years ot of a copter is pretty good. Thoghts?

Keep it.........just had a good giggle reading yr post.

Let us know if it decides to drop any other letters off your keyboard.

I would buy a portable hard disc and a keyboard; make sure all your important data is regularly backed up, and then run it into the ground. You'll get a better machine for the same money in a year's time...

Thanks you two! I am thinking it is a bad connection somewhere as only the number seven, u, j, m, and the apostrophe keys are a problem. Yesterday I was able to get the m to work for a while by really mashing down on it, but not today. Ants have been regular visitors so who knows what they may have done inside.

Streetcowboy, I do regular back ups and will do one before tomorrows project which looks like the video below. Getting a new hard drive is a good idea and I also need to go to a more recent OS.

@ T_Dog.....my humble apologies.

Being the pub forum I honestly thought you were writing a comedy skit and I was thoroughly impressed. It made me think of other letters that you could omit to make a simple story sound hilarious.

So on second thoughts, I cannot help you with the technical side of things.....sorry.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Cheers........I still had a good giggle .......Thanks.

An external USB keyboard, either wireless or wired, will keep you going until you decide which direction you wish to take with the notebook. Ants - yeah, they can mess things up. A repair shop can take it apart and do a thorough cleaning for not too much.

Also, moving it from Pub forum to Computer forum. Have to admit reading your post I didn't recognize you. biggrin.png

Glad you had a giggle as I intended it to be humor and that is why placed it where I did . usually the funniest things in life are real, and the best jokes poke at real life. So keep giggling!

I had expected something about cricket. Depending on how your laptop's legs hold out, there' a spare kneecap (Dennise Compton's) in a biscuit tin at Lords'.

if the notebook is still suiting your needs otherwise (CPU/RAM etc..), then it might be a good idea to search out your make and model replacement keyboard on eBay... they're often not much more than $10-20.

other options are purchase a 120baht USB keyboard, or open the notebook up and give it a good cleaning.. the connectors where it connects to the motherboard etc could be corroded or dirty.

Using a spell checker helped me get through a few months with a bad keyboard which dropped "s" and "q". Once I finished a document, I'd just run it through the checker and it would auto correct 90% of the miss-typed words.

You don't need an external keyboard. Just buy a new laptop. I'm surprised you even have to ask.

Well, I'm sporting a new external keyboard. Same size as the laptop's so I can just rest it on top. A new laptop is on the horizon, just not too sure how fast the ship is sailing.

I had an old IBM Thinkpad and the keyboard failed after about seven years. I bought and used an external USB keyboard. I bought a new laptop not long after that and gave the old one to a Thai friend of mine. That was about three years ago and he is still using it.

as long as it's working for you, don't waste your money on a new notebook. as i stated earlier, check ebay for keyboards for your make and model, or open it up and clean the contacts and insides of any gunk. or, just stick with the USB keyboard...

Since it is a acbook, shouldn't this be in Apple forum?

Anyway, try to give it a good and thorough clean. Or get a new acbook pro.
