Im planning to get some books online. I reckon that i will be placing an order quite often a month if the process get set up nicely and done.

Will need some clarifying on this from those who have done it.

Browsing through all the older threads. I found out that

- Amazon US do not deliver to Thailand anymore. Amazon UK still deliver ?

- U need a Bangkok Bank Online card for purchasing the orders only? No other banks card could purchase online. You will be given a code. Entering the 'thai address' into the web will not be a problem.

- Best route is to deliver to friends in the UK, repack & send by normal mail ?

- Do not send by fedEx or DHL.

- Declare as gift/ printed book/ no commercial value. In order to not get hit by taxes, vat, import taxes, value taxes, shipping taxes, i dun like farang taxes whatever, the lists goes on?

What is the shipping cost like from Amazon itself ? I read from threads that the shipping cost as much as the book itself. Is this for real ?

Amazon is weird about book shipping costs. The shipping cost to send a few childrens books was going to be more than the cost for them to send a 15kg stroller...

It seems like some items are shipped from US and other items are shipped from somewhere in Asia, obviously the costs will be reflect this.

Hi Holysteel

I assume you want physical books (eBooks suit me fine) and shipping from Amazon it costly and slow.

Have you looked into second hand bookshops in BKK to see if they have your needs. There are some great ones that ship inexpensively and promptly throughout Thailand.

Amazon US and UK both ship to Thailand, but they won't sell used books if your address is in Thailand. Shipping is usually quicker from the UK. The shipping costs are quite expensive. It could by $8 for a $10 book. Think about getting a Kindle or other ebook reader.

Holysteel, you mention needing a Bangkok Bank Online card for purchasing. I seem to have no trouble using any of my UK credit cards...

I used my Austrian credit cards without any problems.

Have you checked out Asia Bookshop on line - cheaper than the store and free delivery within Thailand

No. I want a Thai bank card to do the ordering here, for better convenient. I read the Bangkok bank one is the only way to go ?

Kasikorn gives an online credit card which seems to work, at least for use with Paypal it did work for me.

Why not order online from one of the many businesses in Thailand allready providing this service.

No customs worries, the selection is pretty good, and usually comes the next day.

Sent from my HTC One X using Thaivisa Connect App

Yes i have checked them out. But they do not carry the books i want.

Hows the Kindle thing hold up for u guys? Is it good ? Do they have all titles available in kindle version to download? How does it work anyway ?

Im leaning more toward hardcopy. Because i could set up a mini library then. It could be hand down for generations to generations. Do books shipped in are liable for taxes ? I read zero tax for books ?

Have the Kindle App on my Galaxy Tab which means when in your amazon account you choose send to Android device rather than Kindle. Stephen Leather released a couple of excellent short stories for free which gave me the opportunity to try it out, worked like a charm.

You can set up a wish list and have friends buy you books (or book tokens) too.

I've also used torrents to back up my complete collection which gives me confidence that when termites take over the world I'll be able to read from our position of slavery. Yup the buggers ruined some of my store.

As much as I love a book in the hand, it's just so much easier at the beach, by the pool, at 10 minute traffic lights in the dark and as well as a space saver, easier for book swapping with friends.

And forgot this one - can change the bloody font size!

Sent from Android, please excuse errors in type or judgement.

I just placed an order with Amazon US using my Krung Thai Black Diamond Visa card. It did not get through.. And was refused by my issuing bank.

Called up Krung Thai 24hrs hotline. They told me to check if the website has VBV enabled. Which means Verified by Visa. To which Amazon US does not have this feature.

Any ways around this. Anyone ?

Kindle is excellent. Most new titles come in a kindle version. Among the titles older than a few years some have kindle versions and some don't. You browse titles on the kindle itself or at kindle.com using a computer. You can see the title, author, price, summary and customer reviews. If you are interested, you can download a sample of the book, usually the first chapter, for free. Then, if you want to buy the book, you press the buy button and have it on your kindle usually within a minute, billed to your credit card.

As for your dreams of a hard copy library legacy, you are likely to be disappointed. Modern books are usually printed on high-acid paper, which turns yellow in a few years and then starts to fall apart. Similarly, the modern "perfect" binding is glued, not sewn in ligatures, and also falls apart within a few years. There are some exceptionally high-quality editions, of course. In my opinion, ebooks are the only way to go.

you dont need a kindle (device), all ebooks can be downloaded to the PC, too.

bookmarks can be set, and with right-mouse-click on a word a dictionary translation is available (in case its not written in your mother tongue)..

it was because the address of the visa card and the address in the shop/shipment would not be the same...

even though, i had my address changed at BKK bank, it seems the visa address hasnt been changed...
