If all Farangs would stop smoking, Bangkok wouldn't be even 1% cleaner.

That's not what the non-smoking brigade want to hear, They believe that a dropped butt is equivalent to nuclear fallout.

To teach these smokers a lesson, the authorities should do what the airport police do to suspected shoplifters.

Lock them up in a filthy short time room for a few days, introduce them to a fake Lawyer, drain their bank account of $8,000 and then let them off with no paperwork and a warning.

You sure you don't want a public flogging thrown in as well?

Its more that smokers like you would not accept a simple solution like a mobile ashtray because it would inconvenience you. Its so much easier to trash it.. I keep on to my trash and wait for a bin i was raised to not litter.

To respond to the pest who keeps asking me the same question 20 times. I don't condone littering nor do I litter. I don't throw my butts in the street but put them out and wait until I can dispose of them correctly. I don't carry a mobile ashtray as I tend to smoke where ashtrays are provided. Happy now?

Edit..

Nor do I blow smoke in people's faces or smoke near someone who is eating, smoke in non-smoking areas, near children, animals or vegetables. I think I've covered myself.

There is a footpath Officer that stations himself inside the (air conditioned) Times Square lobby, near Sukhumvit Soi 12.

He lurks there, waiting for a farang to exit the building and light up.

One smoking farang after another gets busted/fined.

Times Square doesn't provide and ashtray or place to extinguish the butts, even though there is a steady flow of smokers exiting the building to light up.

Why the Times Square Management doesn't provide a receptacle I wonder?

Don't have to be a rocket scientist to answer your question. There's no money in providing an ashtray or a bin.

carrying a mobile ashtray around sort of takes the glamour away from smoking.

On another note, been on theses e-cigs for 2 days now and sweating like mad at night.

Anyone know if there safe? or had the same experience?

I can't believe you didn't have a plan to secure your trash. You are a guest in this country, act like it. Perhaps you didn't get the memo on the hazards of smoking?

We are not guests in this country. We are more like customers. We pay through the nose and jump through hoops. Thailand is like a mediocre city centre hotel (about the same level of service for your buck as well). We are customers and therefore we are always right. thumbsup.gif

I agree with everything you said, but according to some members of this forum the Thai police are amongst the best in the world, or at least better than Mexico, Cental America and a few other liberated countries. The police here are busy rooting out the "Mr Bigs" of the drug world, Russian Mafia etc. I just wonder if some of the cretins who post these ridiculous comments are actually living in this country?

These are the comments by MrRealDeal

Well you have to compare it to something else ....if you compare it to perfection not so much , if you compare it to other places with equal recources and development I say yes , look at the cime domination in Columbia or Mexico . look at how the Russian Mafia dominates most everyday life in Moscow . What I look at is how are the streets and my life operating , and they are operating just fine , I don't see dozens of people beheaded on a regualr basis here like in Mexico , I don't see the Taxi mafia or the Mafia here in general anywhere close to dominating culture or government like Russia , I don't see regular daily drive by shootings like In LA or New Orleans , ect.

Sorry to tell you but comparatively to other 2nd world countries Thailand's Poliecing is doing just fine.

The people who believe either they have fully integrated into a society that hates them or have given up with on all their morals and customs they attained growing up. They believe they are enlightened. The only ones I take seriously are those who have learned the language, taken residency, incorporating their beliefs into the the culture (not selling out basically).

Did you get the memo re people who can't help telling others on how to live their lives? It basically says, Pull Your Head In.

nice bunch of people we have here. Apparently smokers is on a par with shop lifting, and others are almost Saudi in their response to the vicious crime of dropping a fag but.

Smokers are an easy target for the filth to extort money. Simple as that. The same cops all smoke, and drop their buts on the floor. There actions have nothing to do with policing and everything to do with extortion. The same as everything else they so. They are not a police force they are a criminal moneymaking racket. I am amazed that anyone would ever rush to their defence. They are incompetent fools who are not fit to be called police. Because they are not. They have even reduced to the entrance exam into a method for people to buy their way in. Each promotion would be bought and paid for. I heard the other day from a chap whose Dad is in the police that the police housing in Chokchai 4 is mostly sublet because even the newer recruits con good enough dime to live in a nicer house.

It is no different to them extorting protection money from businesses (which they do, as do the army, and the mafia gangs as well). It is no different from the extorting money from motorists whose only offence was driving a car near the end of the month and the coppers want some ore cash. Why is everyone attacking smokers? The police here are scum. Sure there are irresponsible smokers same as the drinkers who puke up their guts, cause fights, and all sorts (the two are not mutually exclusive). I find a puddle of puke a lot more offensive than a fag butt on the floor.

The lack of bins are not because of security. Cripes, there is so much crap on the streets of this country that you could put a few large boxes of bomb materials anywhere and no one would pay attention to them. Thailand is so wrapped up in its own image of itself believing they are a world player (blink.png ) that they think they are a target? Well no - they have 2 ladies on each bit of street paid to walk up and down to pick up rubbish. Even if there was not any rubbish they would still be employed to do so because giving people jobs is more important to Thais (especially when they most likely had to pay a bribe to get the job) and it is cheap cheap cheap. Have bins.... you need a truck to pull away the rubbish and then that creates havoc on the roads because they have no concept of managing things. At all. Except extortion. Which they are good at.

Each BTS station has at least one copper on the bridge looking out for Farangs dropping cigarette buts. that is his job. To make money. I and would think to get that job he has and is paying a job lot of cash to his superiors.

Rise up fellow smokers - read my thread about cat and mouse with the coppers and bore them into submission.

I see a new movement, OBKK, Occupy Bangkok......clap2.gif

Mate - mrrealdeal (ROFL at the irony of the name) is not worth blocking as his idiocy is very amusing indeed. Never ceases to amaze me the tripe he comes out with whilst sitting behind his computer, and you can almost imagine the supercilious look on his face believing that you must be an idiot for not agreeing with his mindless ramblings. He's apparently blocked me, but I know he hasn't as he will report this as a blatant attack on him despite the fact that that is all he does to others and gets away with it.

i have travelled and lived in many places in the world in my 40 years of taking breath, and even in some of the worst places in the world like Sudan for example, I trust the police more than I do here and have more respect for them if only because in some way they actually attempt to police, not just steal and extort money. Thai cops are the worst I have ever encountered. Anywhere in the world.

about 20 years ago i was talking to a friend about going to thailand on a holiday, as he had just recently been there, and his reply was a beautiful country, but his outstanding memory was being fined for throwing his fag end away in bangkok, on a waste ground, seems as though the message has not got around the world yet even after 20 odd years.

I was stopped and fined in Bangkok (many years ago - as a tourist) for dropping a fag on the road.

It terrified the life out of me as I didn't have the faintest idea what was going on when approached by the policeman and he indicated to follow him. The 'booth' was quite some way away, so far away that I started to think 'something weird going on here - am I about to be mugged?'!

Anyway, when I eventually realised that it was a fine for littering, I understood and, whilst not happy (butts everywhere) - eventually realised it was not worth worrying about.

Edit - Just seen your post trueblue and its true. My main memories of Bangkok (at least 10 years later!) are the scammers and - being frightened silly by a policeman marching me a long way for a fine... sad.png

For some reason you seem to have a hardon for these guys.

I fail to see how it can be a scam, someone tosses a butt and is fined for doing so, please point out the scam.

Lets have a look at all the other scams taking place on a daily basis, freelance prositutes and their pimps, massage parlour touts, tuk tuk drivers, taxi drivers who wont use the meter, Mr Luckyman, drug dealers, ladyboy pickpockets, the illegal bars that appear at night, fake charity workers.

Thats before we get onto the peddlars, beggars, and the kids working the streets at night.

Why do we never see the NGOs on the streets at night rounding up the VERMIN that control these kids?

For the simple reason, theres nothing they can do to stop it, thats why it continues, along with all the others I have just listed.

To me the whole area is a cess pit, but for some reason the tourists seem to love it.

I had a great job for a few years but a downside was that I had to clean up after the noble hockey players had left, every second Sunday night. I would rather have cleaned the toilets than cleaned up after these thoughtless, really manly guys had spat out their malignant crap all around the ice rink (where they nicely froze to the ground despite a smoking ban). These are the same guys that could without a qualm come and sit down next to you while you were eating and light up without asking.

I think those days are disappearing but guys, you shouldn't be surprised that the pendulum has swung the other way.

I am addicted to sex but don't throw used condoms around, I like a beer but don't throw my empty cans to the ground.

The equivalent for a smoker to understand would actually be: "i like drinking beer but after having one too many i dont start pissing on your face(cancer smoke in face) or puking on your shoes(cig butts)

Rise up fellow smokers - read my thread about cat and mouse with the coppers and bore them into submission.

It's rather amusing watching you guys plead your case. What exactly are you guys after? What I mean is if you had your Ambassador's ear, what would you ask of him/her? "I demand the right to dispose of my used ciggy butt any darn place I please!" Is that it?

And the idea that farangs are being singled out is really a red herring, isn't it? So what you guys are saying is you'd be happy to cough up a thousand or two baht if the Thai guy next to you was being fined the same? I doubt that. But it's the only argument you have and it's not even relevant. Years ago, I was driving down the highway in the USA--going with the flow of traffic--and got pulled over and cited for speeding. My excuse was "everyone else was speeding." The officer just said simply, "but were YOU speeding?" That's all that mattered.

But by all means, whine away. Smokers should realize that Thailand is one place where you most likely have more rights than back home.

Disclaimer: I'm not a chain-smoker, but do light up occasionally and have no sympathy for the OP whatsoever.

You're right. I was angry purely because I had no idea what was going on and was therefore, frightened. (Fear leads to anger) Plus, even when I understood, could see no reason why I'd been 'pounced' on when there were butts everywhere.

Having said this, its right that us smokers should ALL learn not to dump our butts on the ground.

To use your argument, if the police were only pulling over white cars for speeding but ignored all the black ones that were doing the same, are you saying you wouldn't be a little miffed?
