Theft / Crime ?

Mainly theft / burglary seems to be a problem in certain areas of Rural-Thailand. Strictly hearsay: Isaan is the worst! I don't know.

Fortunately, I have so far not been affected by any of this but I don't live in the Isaan. AND:

- I live very modestly in a very modest small house and everybody knows, that this one here is not a "rich farang". When I am absent during the day, I leave the door wide open and I don't even bother to close and lock the door.

But this might do the trick, at least in my case: I have given my neighbour free use of my land (Currently he is growing sweet corn on my land) and upon the birth of his son (last December) I have offered to function as something like an "Uncle" and I supply an "education-account" for the kid at the rate of 300 Bht per month at the local bank.

What can I say. At the slightest irregularity on my property, he or a family member rushes out to take a good look at any "intruder". = The last "intruder" was a newly hired bill-collector from the water-works on his motorbike that had the misfortune that they diden't know him. The poor devil was held as a hostage until it was clear that he is actually the new bill-collector for the water-works.

Under these circumstances, I don't think that I need any guard-dogs or electronic surveillance cameras. Hehe!

Anyone with a similar approach, that works the same way? Must add: Will not work "within the family".

Cheers.

hehehe good thinking there swissie. In my wife village ive never seen any burgalry but they always lock the doors so it must happen.

In my view the happiest foreign men in thailand also dont live a lavish lifestyle. Who gives a monkeys if the thai villagerss think you are poor.

Don't have a front door so can't lock it, beer sits in a big ice box on the street, never lost one. Get caught stealing in the village and it;s BKK for 3 to 5 years or a one way walk into the jungle.

OK for the lads in another village to steal my rubber or fish, from the farm, but they can not come and steal in this village, or their own village. Wheels within wheels and rules that I will never understand.

Lots of guns out here and no police, everything is decided by the village leaders and justice can be swift. Jim
