First the NASA debacle, now Thailand wants to sidestep internationally recognised trade sanctions to do trade with Iran, perhaps the minister in question is looking for ways to isolate Thailand from the rest of the world. what next?

no they are not internationally recognized. Russia, China, Indonesia and Japan don't recognize them.

There are various sanctions by various entities against Iran.... US, UN and EU, so Thailand is running the risk of miffing a whole of people off not just the colonial cousins, now seeing as Thai goverment departments are eyeing up "cheap properties" in europe per the other article on TV, they should be prevented from doing so because they intend to openly trade with terrorists

They don't intend to trade with Iran, the minister is asking for money under the table for not trading with them.

If he wanted to trade with them he would have done it silent.

Would Iran be nice enough to include in the deal not sending terrorists to carry out bombings in Thailand never, ever again?

Saudi Arabia is the country that sponsors the terrorists, not Iran.

Iran is the country with the uranium enrichment.

OK as an example please let us know who provides weapons, training, funding etc for Hezbollah? On the reverse who wiped out Al Qaeda on their territory due to their threat to the regime. Acknowledge that some Saudi Arabian clerics do promote and fund Wahhabism

"The American should have sympathy on this issue. Iranian needs rice for consumption while Thailand, which has no sufficient petroleum resource, wants energy," Surapong said.

I doubt this guy understands the meaning of trade sanctions. sad.png

Because the U.S have trade sanctions, does that mean that Thailand should also? What trade agreements Thailand and Iran come up with has absolutely nothing what so ever to do with the U.S. They should butt out and mind thier own business, if Thailand wants to trade with Iran then they are free to do so. The U.S has absolutely no authority in Thailand.

.......or should it read "Thailand has absolutely no authority in the US." Thailand would be smart to dodge Tehran until the US/world powers figures it all out.

China has reduced its oil imports by about 50% from Iran

Japan has also reduced oil imports from Iran, as well as placing its own sanctions over its nuclear program

All Thailand is doing is what Indonesia proposed to do earlier this year, were they wanted to barter staples for Iranian gas, therefore the idea is not even an original one from the esteemed FM, just following the normal Thai practice of copying other people's idea's

Several UN sanctions are recognized by the aforementioned countries. Whether China and Russia are complying with them is a different story. The EU which was the favourite banking zone for Iranian banks implemented stiff measures in March of this year.

In respect to the suggestion by Thailand, hopefully rational thought will prevail as Thailand could see retaliatory measures adopted by the EU and USA/Canada including trade sanctions. The intent of the sanctions is to pressure the Iranians to abandon their nuclear weapons development program so as to avoid a new war in the region that would also see missiles targeted at the EU. If the Thais can't grasp that, then they deserve to suffer the consequences.

Thailand can trade with whomever it wishes. However, there are consequences such as the EU and USA/Canada withdrawing favoured trade agreements. These reduced tariffs and most favoured trade designations are not obligations but are accomodations granted by the trade partners in recognition of Thailand's relationship with them.

National sovereignty has been gradually replaced with globalism for some time now.

The clincher would be proving that there actually no cash transaction attached to this. Just look at the mess that various western banks got into for facilitating money movements in and out of Iran. I am not sure Bangkok Bank, or the Bank of Thailand would enjoy any type of limitation on its ability to transact with US and EU banks.

Enabling a country to bust open UN sanctions is rarely a good thing.

With ultra high level trade negoitions between Iraq and Thailand going on, the western powers might just enough time to Nuke Iran and turn their country into little glass

figurines of that turbin wearing jerk off leader, and that pip squeak president. giggle.gifcoffee1.gif

Just wonder how many millions of baht this chump has taken to come up with such ludicrous concepts and try to promote them. Grubby man, grubby country, trying to find a way to do business with Iran. Hopefully this will be enough for the UN (usa basically) to jump all over Thailand to see what is going on already. Bound to be something with this little bird tweeting away.

a further little problem with the FM's cunning plan.....

who is going to ship the petroleum products ? (one assumes here oil) as there is a ban on insurance for tanker companies dealing with Iran O&G products, now seeing as the major shipping companies fall under either US or EU jurisdiction, they will not touch Iranian oil

How about a pipeline from Iran to Thailand? Easy done, just like Pattaya bargirls, laid by 1000's of men in a single night.

this is just a way to evade the embargo... rice for oil and gas

mhhhh

hope they can sell it at premium 15000 baht per ton and not a transaction where thai will sell at only 10.000 or less, and so use tax payers money to sponsor this illegal deal

Just a minor little problem with the FM's "mulling"....first off the sanctions are not just US sanctions but UN and EU sanctions, a further little problem with the FM's cunning plan.....

Perhaps the Thai aircraft carrier has finally found a purpose. It could hold a lot of oil

Ref sanctions, there are three sets. One set (the tightest) is by the US. The second is by the eu - and it is this set that is hitting Iran hardeat on oil and gas as it prohibits EU insurance companies from covering oil and gas cargos to or from Iran. As EU P&! clubs cover most global shipping, Iran has been unable to export except through its own vessels or those of buying countries who self-insure (e.g. China).

Thailand is not bound by either set of sanctions - but it can be an affected third party.

The final set (by the UN) do bind Thailand but they are largely limited to military supplies and trade.

NONE of the sets prohibit shipment/sale of food to Iran. US sanctions specifically exempt food, medical supplies and humanitarian assistance.

Bottom line. Thailand can sell as much rice as it wants - and can buy oil - BUT can it get the oil shipped to Thailand?

That is exactly as I remember seeing it. Food is rarely embargoed by sanctions. So it appears the FM hasn't done his homework.......
