Does Internet Tv Take Up A Lot Of Bandwidth

Featured Replies

i live in a serviced apartments and the manager is trying to save cash by dumping the True tv package he has because he says it costs too much as he has to pay per room for it,the place has about 80 rooms...

he now is using just cable tv which has basic thai channels, a japanese, korean, french and german channel and farang news channels plus has 3 internet tv boxes and tunes each one into a pay channel and pipes them to every room ( about 500 baht a month per box he says)..he then keeps changing them from AXN to discovery to nat geo or sport....they are not that good and 50% of the time the screen goes blank and the rest of the time the pic is grainy or unstable.

I have noticed that the wifi internet in the hotel has gone down hill with pages slow and some sites not loading...on questioning him about it and suggesting that his 3 internet tv boxes may be sapping the bandwidth slowing down the hotel internet he denys that there is a problem

can anyone give me any advice?

Move?

From title it seems you believe they are using internet TV? There are independent cable systems that most Thai use for cheaper cable access and suspect that is likely what is being used - nothing to do with internet as those stations listed are normal on such systems.

As lopburi3 said there are independent Thai cable operators which offer basic Thai channels and some farang type channels. A couple of my in-laws in Bangkok is on such a cable systems and it costs them around B250/month...OK programming for a Thai since it provides all the basic/popular Thai channels....but probably lacking for a farang looking for more English language programming.

Streaming video/internet TV does require significant bandwidth...probably 1-2Mb per channel and it has to be good/smooth flowing bandwidth to prevent pausing and other picture problems. Even a high speed internet connection, say 100Mb, could suck for streaming video if it's not a smooth flowing bandwidth. If you search on ThaiVisa there is no shortage of posts complaining about how hard it is to get smooth streaming video/TV internet for many farangs staying in Thailand because it tough to get good/high speed internet in many Thailand locations...even in Bangkok and other large cities.

I expect your landlord is just minimizing his telecommunications/cable TV costs by switching cable providers and maybe not having enough bandwidth to adequately serve all the apartments.

My guess would be people downloading torrents which can be blocked by the owner in the router set up menu. I doubt anyone is actually trying to stream TV because if they were you would have periods where you would actually have good internet when they were not using it where as downloading torrents is something you can do 24 hours a day and it will suck all the bandwidth available.

I wonder if he's bright enough to have changed the router's default password?

LMAO, yeah, you have a valid point there I suppose there are a lot of people out there that wouldn't know how to do it or even think about doing it. So, chances are the user name is admin and password is admin. Now all you need is the IP address. thumbsup.gif

Which is normally your gateway.

Get into the QOS, give yourself 90% of the bandwidth and Hey Presto!

found the IP address and yes the router user name and password are admin LOL

so being on WiFI is there any way i can make my internet connection faster?

Have a look and see what sort of traffic it's using. You might be able to get an idea of the total bandwidth and which IP is sucking it all up if any.

Doesn't say much. I'm not familiar with the router, so I'm guessing "Advanced Setup" probably has settings for the local WLAN, so you can see who's connected, etc.

I wouldn't bugger about with it if you don't know what you are doing....

Err, stop messing with mans Wi-Fi unless you want to CCD knocking on ya door.

I would nt dream of messing with it but maybe someone can tell me

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin : 19.4 9.8 db

does the above mean the router is getting 9.415MB of download speed and 1.004 MB of upload?

my speedtest result is 1.0MB download as are 2 other people in the building with some websites not dowloading properly
