Get In The Taxi First, Then Tell Them Where To Go

Tired of getting refused by taxi drivers telling you all kinds of excuses for not giving you a ride?

Now we can make a statement and tell the taxi guy we know it's illegal to pull that shit anymore.

Just get in the taxi, and then tell them were to go, they know, that you know, and we show them we expect to give us the ride

If they really are getting off a shift, tell them to shut off the sign that says the cab is vacant.

I think we will have to get use to seeing taxis without their lights on.

Well, it will first and foremost be their problem. If they dont want any customers, they should not drive a cab in the first place.

If they do wanna drive a cab, be honest and poltie to your customers, after all, they are suppose to provid us with a service. That is really what we are paying for.

I always get in first and 95% of the time they take me. The other 5% they just want to squeeze one more fare in before their shift ends. It is annoying but I have a bit of sympathy for them considering taxi fares haven't gone up at all for years.

It isn't just the foreigners that have a problem looking at this picture, the Thais are in the same boat wink.png

Well it is true, thais are also annoyed by the fact that many taxi drivers refuses them as well.

Get in Taxi, Told get out Taxi. Get in another Taxi .Told get out Taxi. Get in another Taxi and off we go. Not too hard after all. I worry more about their speed not about getting first Taxi. If you were finishing shift and a fare asked to go across BKK, would you do an extra 2 or 3 hours to return to pick up point. and get fined for not having Taxi ready for new Driver at end of timed shift. get real.

If they don't want to take me then i don't want to use them and it is my money they are missing out on. They loose, not me ! ! ! And there is always another taxi that will willingly take me.

Yes, of course. They wouldn't make new laws/rules for the sake of the Falahng.

So many taxis on the road that I really don't care if one of them isn't going my way there is often another one waiting behind the one I have stopped in case it refuses my fare. I've often had a "no" from a driver but never had a problem getting to where ever I wanted to go.

You either dont live here on a permanent basis

Or

You don't use taxis very often

Wrong on both assumptions smile.png

On any main road when you flag down a taxi there will often be another empty taxi that has seen you that pulls up behind the first one. You obviously want a ride and the second taxi driver knows as well as you do that the first taxi driver may well refuse the route so they have a chance of picking up a fare.

Doing as the OP suggets and just getting into a taxi and demanding to be taken somewhere is a typically western aggressive move that really doesn’t do you any favours over here.

If you have persistent problems it may be that your pronunciation of your destination is at fault rather than the destination itself. Try naming a major hotel or other landmark in the vicinity of where you want go and once rolling redirect them to where you really want to go.

Just had a friend send me a helpful PM and part of the message was ....

over the last 2 -3 months from midnite till about 3-4 am on lower Sukhumvit .. it is almost impossible to get into the second or third taxi that pulls up... consistently being refused

.... so that might be what the OP is talking about which is somewhat specific and not as general as implied in the first post.

I've stiil never had a problem at these times 'cos I'm either asleep or too busy drinking to notice tongue.png

If you really want to piss them off.

When a taxi stops make sure you open the rear passenger side door and tell him where you want to go. If he refuses, just leave it ajar and walk away.

Never fails to get the desired response.

Funny, on reading your initial post I would have assumed exactly the same about you.

Dlock... a brother in alms!! (sic) I now always leave the back door open in the most polite way (but you must actually leave it fully open as they can close it with out having to get out of the cab if just ajar.. one in five go off like a firecracker. at which point I scarper (one of them even chased me with a what looked like a tyre lever). Samsip is right arsenic hour(s) in lower Suk are between midnight and early morning - when most of the taxi drivers are just dreaming you will ask them to take you to Climax where they get 100baht to drop anyone off and the fare is free. Good value actually is to take the free taxi to climax and catch another one that has just dropped off their catch. If in lower suk often have to wait 20 minutes if you don't walk back and into Soi 3 or down past Soi 23. Hopeless otherwise.. one night had to take a tuk tuk t get home "eee gads" to Onnuch from Soi 5 which was cheaper than the taxi scalpers wanted... and that was with my Thai wife asking at least 20 cabs and me hiding behind a cocktail cart. I just can never find out what the 'ideal destination is' another trick is to split the journey.. ask to go a short way say Thong Lor .. then hop out and take another cab who has not made it back to cartel corner. Samsip... I guess with your late drinking hours - you would probably be able to catch the first morning sky train back anyway... (you might even meet me)

Would be fun if they take your picture and spread it around so you never get a taxi ride again.

yes absolutely Frits.. a lot seem to know me already and make angry faces.. that's why I hide behind the cocktail cart. the technique now is once my Mrs gets the nod.. I dash across and jump into the cab as the door is closing.. turning my head away until the driver pulls off. once they spot me... some mutter about far lang key knock or something (what ever that means)..then watching me continuously through the mirror for the whole trip home...
