telstrareg Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 I just started subscribing to their ADSL service in Wiang Pa Pao. Do they have any practical download limits that anyone has encountered? I'm wondering if they cut you off at the knees if you exceed 100 gigs a month or something like that. The service has been pretty good so far. Reliable and about as fast as claimed.
Dork Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 If you read the fine print in the service agreement there probably is a "fair use" clause saying something to the effect that you can't download at full speed for extended periods. I'm not sure about TOT but in the case of TRUE they do specify an hourly limit according to the package you have. In real life though, they don't enforce that - at least not in my experience and I've never heard of anyone being cut off or throttled because of it. 100GB/month or roughly 3.3GB/day isn't abnormally high nowadays. Don't worry.
worgeordie Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 Hi Telstsareg, Good luck with TOT ADSL, I have had the service for several years, at first it was not too bad ,stable reliable, started I think with 1Mb then they upped it to 3Mb,same price, I am now on (supposedly) 7Mb at same price, and its terrible, pages loading at Dial up speed, now disconnects in the rain!!, Bloody useless I was going to move to TOT WiFi, but now people reporting that is also crap. , So like I said Good Luck, regards Worgeordie

Yeah I usually set bigger downloads to run at lower speed so I'm not pumping like 7 Mb for hours on end.

So often a service can look worse than it is on average. I have 2 other friends in the area who have both tried 3BB and TOT Wifi. One swears by 3BB and says TOT was crap and the other says the reverse. I think a huge part of it boils down to your location, which unfortunately is not an easy thing to change. Mainly your distance from the exchange or the Wifi transmitter obstructions. I also tried to get 3BB but after measuring the distance the tech said I was too far away and it couldn't be installed. I much rather that than installing a supposedly 7Mb connection and then getting 2Mb. Incidentally my TOT service is 8.0/1.0 Mb and I'm getting 7.0/0.85 which I'm really pleased with.
JAS21 Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I'm not too sure about these speed tests ... I have just done two ... one using speedtest1.totbb.net/ locally and the other to London using speedtest.net
Vale Tudo Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I'm not too sure about these speed tests ... I have just done two ... one using speedtest1.totbb.net/ locally and the other to London using speedtest.net The Ping time is absolutely massive and the upload time woeful on the second speedtest.net test, suggest you try that again as maybe something wrong there.I live in Bangkok and my Ping time is Six! Even in Phuket it shouldn't exceed 20 by much!
Vale Tudo Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 I've just signed up for True Visions DOCSIS 20Mg download for 1200baht per month, speed tested it yesterday and getting nearly 21.5 Mg download,2.2Mg upload and Ping time of 6.My friend states it is the fastest upload speed he's ever seen in Asia, very happy with their service so far!
JAS21 Posted October 12, 2012 Posted October 12, 2012 OK I have just used namebench to find the 'best' DNS and retested TO LONDON and TO BANGKOK using speedtest.net

Gosh another person unaware that electrons can't travel at faster than light speeds, and that a ping time from Bangkok to London of 6 ms is not physically possible. There are countless threads here explaining why the results you report are completely wrong. It is because you are measuring speeds to a cached server within Thailand that claims to be in Europe or the US. An internet message cannot travel from Thailand to London in 3ms then back in 3ms unless travelling at warp speed through a hole in space and time!

Who said it was to London? Please point out where it says that on my post? Sorry if I misunderstood. In your post you said "the ping time was absolutely massive" followed by " my ping time is Six" and you were replying to a post where the only ping time given was from Bangkok to London. There were no other destinations mentioned. At very least your reply was ambiguous if you were referring to a ping time to somewhere not mentioned either in your post or the post you were replying to.
jerrysteve Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 SOmetimes too in the older areas, new wiring by True or Tot must take place...especially in the older outlying areas where there is new construction of homes and apartments.
