Open & Closed Ports And Forwarding

Featured Replies

This is an issue which has confused me for a very long time, and every time I try figuring it out again, I get trapped in the abbreviations and terminology.

To be honest, I really don't need to understand it, just ensure that it's set properly on my iMac.

I suspect that some of the lack of seeding I'm doing is a result of poor or inefficient or non-at-all port forwarding, but I'm not even sure of that.

Every time I open Transmission, which I use for many of my torrents, and look at the Preferences > Network window, I see the "Peer listening port:" with a number, and then a red button beside it with the note "Port is closed"

I have both the boxes underneath, "Randomize port on launch" and "Automatically map port" checked.

Even if I click the "Randomize" button, I get a new number but still that closed indication.

Could someone walk me through this procedure without explanation if possible, and just give me a step by step procedure I should follow?

I also use Transmission and have no problems.

Thanks. I managed to follow the information in that url and at least I do now have an open port, and immediately Transmission began uploading.

Does this mean that I should NOT have the Randomize port on launch box checked?

And does this also mean that I should go through the full procedure again if I do a restart and therefore a new internet connection, probably with a new address?

Is there a significant difference between TCP and UDP? I don't know what they are, but the port tester seems to differentiate.

And another question, as I couldn't edit my earlier post:

Should I do something similar for uTorrent, which I use for some torrents, but is banned (or at least not appreciated) on some trackers like TheBox?

Haven't seen any problems with it, but .....?

No

No, Transmission will remember the settings

TCP and UDP often use the same ports but not always. Read about it at http://en.wikipedia....DP_port_numbers

Sorry I don't use uTorrent and I am not familiar with the program
