Linh and I are heading to NZ for a couple of months, and it is about time we upgrade from our Nokia with the postage-stamp-sized mono screen peppered with dead pixels, and with two functions -- makes and answers calls. Oh yeah, and it texts.

We need a pair of them. They should work with sim cards in Thailand and NZ. We have a top-of-the-line Nikon DSLR, so a camera is not important, but I guess a camera is a must nowadays for a phone not to be an embarrassment.

We know nothing about cell pnones. How about a Samsung model somethingorother for 3,000 baht each?

We obviously are out of the loop. Help please.

Thanks, aeolon and linh

About 3000-4000 baht. A receptionist suggested the Samsung Galaxy Y, but we checked the reviews - Y stands for "young" (really!) and it is tiny, good for tiny hands with low expectations, it being a rather low IQ smart phone. Maybe a Nokia would be best?

The thing is, if we go smart, we might as well go whole hog. Half hog is not cheap, and is often unsatisfying.

Any final suggestion, guys?

Wellcome do a nice smartphone for about 7000. Saw it in seacon square. I can give you the contact there if you're interested.

You don't sound like you're much interested in a smartphone, but if you want to go smart-ish, consider Blackberry you get the best of both worlds. You can pick up a pair of 9800's or 9860's for around $300ea. Free BBM between the two anywhere in the world - Blackberry data plans roam worldwide provided you have roaming (which costs you nothing, you're not forced to use for voice/sms, it just has to be enabled) with your provider.

Edit: Oops. Should've finished the whole thread before posting, didn't notice you already bought a pair. Oh well, consider bb for next time. :)

This might be cool, if you want to go for the retro look!

Hey I remember this phone, 30+ years back my boss had this model, he was 'the first boy on the block to have a mobile phone'.

What's not shown is the very large and very heavy separate battery pack. The phone itself was also quite heavy.

I like the Nokia PC-Suite software for connectivity to a PC.

You must be the first one to like Nokia PC-Suite :)

In my opinion it was always one pain to use bloated software.

For me the big relieve was when I moved from Nokia to Android. Suddenly most of the syncking of data between the phone and cloud services became really easy task to do. There is no real need for having an PC program.

I like the Nokia suite software. You may not need PC software but backups are easier and the Nokia software is much better and easier to use than my Samsung Kies.

Nothing is free with a Blackberry, if you don't subscribe to their 'special' (as in specially expensive) data plan, nothing works.

No GPS, No BBM

Which is why nobody buys Blackberry any more and their shares are in freefall.

I have a 16k Blackberry, it's a useless piece of shit.
