Dick Cheney Shoots Man

For what was spent on that stupid gun registry we could have had 5000 more police officers. A much better investment IMO.

We already had in place a sensible system where the user had to register and be checked out before they could obtain or possess guns. Makes more sense making sure that violent people are prevented from legally owning any firearm, than having violent people individually register each of their weapons. A seperate, and more restrictive permit is required for handguns.

same as in NZ, except jo public is not allowed to own a pistol.Apart from checking you out, they also make you take a gun safety course. The best part of the course, they tell you that pointing a loaded gun at a friend is a bad thing to do.Pointing a loaded gun at a friend and pulling the trigger is worse.... :o

Boonie, I thought you were spending a bit of time in the UK..Vindaloo is a stinking hot Indian(Not the red ones that stuck it to Custer :D:D ) curry. It has been known to burn at both ends as well having amazing laxitive effects. :D

And on a related subject; GUN REGISTRATION: Such a bad idea that even the Canadians are scrapping it. "One former Mountie called the registry 'totally useless' because criminals don't register their guns." Too bad they didn't figure that out a few billion dollars ago... :D

The Canadian plan was seriously flawed from the start. The Liberals :D forced the legislation through when they had a majority in the House. They swore that the total cost to the public would be 2 million dollars (after the income from registrations was offset by the expenses of running the program).

Within a couple of years, the "extra" costs of the program had approached 1 BILLION dollars :D , according to a report by the Auditor-General. That was a few years ago.

Some museums were almost forced to close, as they were required to pay to register all their antique weapons (everything except the oldest flint-lock muskets. The muskets that used percussion cap primers had to be registered though, because criminals find those types of muzzle-loaders much easier to use when commiting robberies and such) :o

The law even affected the military, to a degree. We could no longer carry our rifle magazines in our webbing while travelling back and forth to work. Not because anyone was worried they'd be stolen, but if you got pulled over by the police, you could (theoretically) be charged with being in possession of illegal magazine.

When we first heard of this, the thing that seemed most outrageous was that you could potentially be sent to jail for a longer period for having an illegal magazine, than you would get for commiting armed robbery !

Another disturbing part of the law was the clause that allowed the police to enter your home without a warrant to ensure that you were storing your registered weapons properly. Shades of Hitler in the 1930's (for those that don't know, pre-war Germany instituted a firearm registry in the 30's. Just before they started rounding up the Jews, they went to their houses and confiscated their weapons to prevent resistance or an armed uprising).

I bought an Armalite AR-15 with match grade barrel the year before the registration came into effect. Various parts of the rifle were identical to the rifle we were (are) using in the military.

Other parts were designed to ensure you couldn't convert the weapon to fully-automatic (unless you were a skilled gunsmith with access to a metal work shop).

I used that rifle for target competitions (won a trophy in my first competition !).

After the new law came into effect, I asked the local Mounties about my rifle. I was told it was now a Prohibited weapon, and that if I brought it in to them, they would dispose of it for me no questions asked.

Found out (quite a while later) they were lying. My rifle was grand-fathered and only needed to be registered. Same for my pistols.

Many people simply didn't register, or registered only one of their firearms, or just hid them. But there is a catch. Your license is connected to the firearms you did register. If you registered a 12 guage shot-gun, you couldn't buy ammo for a 410 or a rifle. If you registered your old .22, you couldn't buy .308 ammo for your hunting rifle and so on.

There are plenty of people that would argue that the registry is a good idea, but like many have said, the criminals wouldn't register their weapons, only the law abiding folks, who could end up becoming criminals for doing something simple like having ammo stored in the same locker as their firearms, even if the firearms are properly locked within the locker.

It is estimated that the registry costs the taxpayers up to 90 million a year to maintain (that by itself 45 times more than the entire program was supposed to cost). For the same amount of money, we could have an additional 1,000 police on the streets cracking down on the real criminals.

(Oh yeah, despite having 20+ years of military service at the time, I still had to take a firearms safety course before I could apply for my PAL (Possession and Acquisition License). Almost failed because the military safety standards are higher than what was taught on the course, and the instructor didn't like how we did our safety precautions !)

The guy he shot was a lawyer

should have got a bounty

I was wondering if there would be a market for this T-shirt in Pattaya?
