Question Re Registering A Barnes & Noble Nook

Recommended Posts

I want to buy a Nook as a dedicated E book reader, but see that part of the registration process after you buy is to give them your credit card number. As I never intend to purchase books from them, because I can download all I want for free, is there any way I can avoid giving them credit card details?

There I was, thinking it would be a simple process to buy either a Nook or a Kindle from Ebay, download the 200 or so in Epub format I have stored on my laptop, but not so. I believe both Nook and Kindle have to be registered using a credit card number, which I'm not really happy to do. There's always a catch.

Hi.

just download Calibre (free, google it) to your comp, amazing functionality. There are calibre apps. for handheld devices, too.

You have 200 epubs? Great, PM me, have 1,600, let's swap (actually everyone here is welcome to my stash). Cheers, AA

Hi,

just a note that may be of interest to a potential Kindle buyer. I have just been researching the purchase of a tablet for myslef and was leaning toward the Kindle Fire HD. After several hours reading reviews and cutomer comments on several sites I found two people who had complained that their Kindle's didn't work outside the Uniited States.

More digging turned up the fact that Amazon sells the Kindle at below cost and thus cannot afford to pay for digital content outside the US. No Amazon apps. or videos can be downloaded outside the US, not even Canada. Use as an e-reader would not be a problem if only free books are downloaded. This has quickly pushed me toward the more epensive iPad.

I have no idea if the Nook would have the same problem.

Apparently it does. I would like to get the Nook HD 7 inch model but if you are outside the US (or the UK in my case), you cannot buy new books. However, I believe that it might be possible to use a VPN service to order the books from the Barnes & Noble website and then when your nook is connected to a wi-fi network (in any country) it will download them. You can load them via usb but then they turn up in the documents folder rather than the books folder apparently.

I have been researching online but there seem to be differing opinions. Some people say that with a US credit card and billing address you can now order books direct from a nook even if you are abroad, some say that you can't. If you don't have a US credit card and billing address then a VPN will be of no use in any case.

If anybody is using a nook over here, I would really like to know if it is possible to buy the books from the B & N site using a VPN and then connect to a wi-fi network in Thailand with the nook to download them.

Note: I believe that you can still buy books with a Kindle / Kindle Fire when you are abroad, it's just apps, videos and music that are the problem.

I already have Calibre installed on my laptop, does this mean I can transfer all my Epub books without having to register either the Kindle or the Nook? I thought they had to be registered as soon as they were turned on for them to work. How do you find the size for reading? I read the Kindle screen is only 4.8" X 3.6" which seems pretty small to me. Certainly a lot smaller than the page of a paperback.

I have a 'Kindle' and have no problems at all with downloading books from Amazon.com

I also wanted to buy the 'Kindle Fire' but was told,as late as last Tuesday, that it is not yet available in 'this location'

probably for the already stated reasons, altho no reasons were given.

I'm not quite sure where you have gotten your information from about the Nook.

I have a Nook and didn't have to provide my CC for registration. Because I don't

have a US billing address or CC, all I needed was to provide the serial number of the Nook.

If you do a Google search re "registering a nook" you will see that it says it is mandatory to provide your CC details.

All I can say (again), is that I didn't have to provide my CC details , just the Nook serial number.

There's lot's of people who have purchased Nook's via Ebay, or online sites without

having an account at B&N.

If you're happy to rely on Google, don't buy one. But's it's easy to register without providing your CC details.

But just out of interest, why would it bother you to provide B&N with your CC details anyway?

It's a pain in the arse though. So now if I do purchase, I just use other

online retailers.

For me, there's no reason to use B&N anymore.

I object to providing CC information when I have no intention of ever buying a book from B&N. I can download thousands of books free via the internet, why would I spend money if I don't have to?

I'm not disputing the fact that you didn't provide your CC details when you registered your Nook, but if you go to B&N's official site and see their description of the set-up process, it includes providing your CC details. I copied this from their site:

2. Do I need to provide B&N with my credit card number to use NOOK Simple Touch? What if I'm only reading free eBooks and samples?

Yes. You must have a completed and updated BN.com account to purchase or download paid and free content. This includes an email address, default credit card number, valid expiration date for the credit card, and a current U.S. billing address. Security measures are put in place to protect all of our customers' account information.

I phoned their (B&N) customer support and told them I had been given a Nook as a gift.

I registered an account with them and providing your CC details wasn't mandatory.

The CSR then just asked for the serial number from the box and registered it for me.

To be honest, B&N do make it difficult. I'm really happy with my Nook Color but wouldn't

go through the process of buying one again from them.

I have a feeling I'm just going to go with a Tablet like an I Pad mini. pluses are, no set-up involved, just transfer books from Calibre and bigger screen. Downsides are, short battery life compared to Nook and maybe not as easy on the eyes.

I have both an iPad and an eReader, but use the former only for pdf files that don't work very well on my eReader.

As for registering a CC number or paying for books - there are so many internet sites from which one can download almost any book you want (Ahoy, mateys, for one of them) and then, if it's necessary, use something like Calibre to convert to the format your eReader demands.

May I suggest the bold red sentence is the key, specially the underlined words and my two word addition in brackets?

I have a Kindle DX and Amazon's Whispernet puts books on it within 15-30 secs after buying. I also borrow books from my old U.S. library that end up coming from Amazon but, because the DX is not wireless, automatically come up with Amazon's direction to DOWNLOAD TO COMPUTER for transfer via USB.

Worst case, 1 book might take 2 minutes from check out at library, move to Amazon, download to computer, download onto Kindle, so that is essentially effortless.

I will guess that when I get my wireless Kindle, Amazon would send it through my wireless modem router. I should be able to give specifics in 2 weeks.

Now if I did not want to buy books from Amazon and did not borrow from the library, which automatically sends me to Amazon, I would have no reason to need to register with them. The DX is perfectly capable of working as a stand alone item in my experience. I can download anything to it from the computer. As long as it is in the right format, I would not expect any problems. I have not tried that yet, but the other comments here seem to support that.
