President Thein Sein became the first leader of Burma to visit the tomb of his country’s last monarch King Thibaw who was exiled to India more than 100 years ago. The former general paid homage at the dilapidated crypt for two hours on Saturday in the western Indian coastal city of Ratnagiri, also meeting with royal descendants. “The meeting was marked by emotion,†a local official told the Press Trust of India news agency. The 67-year-old also invited Thibaw’s remaining family to visit Burma in the near future. Thibaw’s reign ended in 1885 when British colonial forces took over Burma and sent him and his family into exile in Ratnagiri.
