[Myanmar] Japanese Finance Minister Vows Economic Support

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso, in Burma for talks with President Thein Sein, said on Thursday that Tokyo will provide an additional US $570 million in loans to the country after writing off $5.7 billion of old debt by the end of this month. At a press conference in Naypyidaw, Aso said that Burma “has been heavily in debt and unable to attract investment. Japan will remove those obstacles and support the country,†Japanese news agency Kyodo reported. Aso will travel to Rangoon on Friday to visit the nearby Thilawa port, where a special economic zone will be built with Japanese investment.
