lomatopo Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Your Android phone may be able to serve as a Mobile AP. Can you share any details re: the exact make/model/rev. of Android SW? There are many 3G router options: ones that accept a SIM directly, ones that accept a USB aircard, which has the SIM installed. A MiFI device may meet your low power requirements? Assuming you want to use TrueMove H then make sure your choice supports (minimally) 850 MHz 3G. http://www.totalaircard.com/categories/3G-Router/ http://www.invadeit.co.th/category/wireless-networking/3g/
Jiu-Jitsu Posted January 4, 2013 Posted January 4, 2013 Be careful of the descriptions, as I have the ZTE MF60 and it doesn't support TRUE/DTAC 3G as suggested on the Totalaircard website, but AIS. But the Huawei e585u-82 seems to cover all bases.

It is advantageous to have a Windows PC for the initial setup. Plug in to the PC, allow the software to install/ Then the default address is 192.168.1.1 But otherwise, if you won't have access to a borrowed machine, you can ask the vendor to set it up for you before sending. He/she can add all of the relevant APN, but set TRUE H as the Default.
bobl Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 The Huawei mifi works great - that's what I have.(E5836). If you can't find one of those, I believe this would make a splendid alternative (it's what I'd have bought if I could have found one in Chiang Mai) http://www.pantipmarket.com/mall/hispeedaircard/?node=products&id=164171
Gary A Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I have the ZTE MF30. It is clearly marked on the box, 850/2100 MHz. I'm using it now but I wouldn't recommend ZTE. It has shut down by itself and refused to restart. Plugging it into the charger overnight seems to get it going again. I am now using a double plug USB cable and so far so good.
lomatopo Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I have a Samsung Galaxy S1 variant (AT&T Captivate) which has been a brilliant phone from the get-go. While it has a single core, 1 GHz, it currently runs Android 4.2.1 (custom ROM) seamlessly, and since it supports 850/1900/2100 MHz 3G I have been using it as a MiFi device (Mobile AP) on TrueMove H when we travel to more rural areas - where there is a TrueMove H 3G presence. We usually have 3 ~ 4 devices 'hanging' off it via WiFi, and (re-) up to a single monthly plan as required. It does run a bit hot, and does need to be plugged in to the AC, but always performs well. I also use it in the U.S. on T-Mobile, pre-paid. Since T-Mo re-farmed some AT&T 1900 MHz 3G I now get 10/4 Mbps on the $3/day (unlimited voice, text, 3G [200MB FUP]) which suits me for my frequent, but short visits to the Boston, MA metro area, even with the snow!
patient Posted January 7, 2013 Author Posted January 7, 2013 thanks for the advice and suggestions everyone. i will be sure to get the mobile installed correctly with true network on vendors computer before leaving.

4evermaat Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I have the ZTE mf 62. Very few problems outside of an occasional disconnect or shutdown. Avoid using multiple power adapters (use only one type every time). Taking out the battery, holding the power button for a few seconds, and then turning back on the device seems to solve any shutdown problems. Not sure if this is firmware related or not, and perhaps they have fixed it in their next model (I think the 72 or 82).
