Who Does The Full Moon Party Benefit ?

As the title says, who are the real beneficiaries of the full moon parties. To me it seems like a concentrated minority , that gain from it , through sales of alcohol etc..... all revolving around that event.

Surely the island economy is not solely reliant on that income. The island offers a lot more , all spoilt & hindered by the reputation acquired from that event as being an out of control booze & drug fest.

To me , I have this perception of a noisy place , centered around parties , not a place to relax & enjoy the beauty of the island.

You can tell me yes it's great & I am sure it is, but that image I have does make a difference if I want to visit & I'm sure it will or has with a lot of people in making a decision to visit.

The casually dressed man sitting under a tree I observed collecting a voucher at the edge of Tong Sala from the assistant on the song teaw I rode from Hadrin to Tong Sala must be happy with the parties. He had a whole clipboard filled with such vouchers.

The Full Moon Party is way more organized, controlled and less dangerous respect to 10, or also 5 years ago.

Killing and other kind of accidents sadly happen many times during the 25 or more years of the FMP existence.

The problem is the complete ineptitude of most of the police force, busy with different kind of activities; the testosterone flows massively; local and neighbor towns young Thais often supercharged by meth and usually with poor resistance for alcohol; the attitude of some kind of tourists that love to fight when drunk; the kind of problems connected with a happening of 20, 30, and sometimes 50.000 people where sh. sometimes happens, despite any form of controls and prevention.

Who get benefit of the existence of the FMP? Most of the tourist operators of the island. From the small countryman that for a couple of days sell booze or paint fluo on the bodies until the Best Western hotel full booked for 5/7 days. With all the kind of business in the middle, enclosed myself.

To be clear, I dream of an island without parties, with a lot of trails in the beautiful mountains, a National Park really working, a stop to the overbuilding (a real flood of concrete), a better valorisation of the beautiful beaches, underwater, and natures KPG is so lucky to have. Where you can do detox, yoga, diving, excursions, meditation, etc (as happen already in a good part of the island). But I'm not Thai nor an administrator, so...

It's true that Had Rin is quite dangerous when the Fullmoon Party is going on, does it mean the Full Moon has to be banned? NO!

The guest house and hotel owners in Haad Rin who know that even in low season they will have one very busy week per month.

Anyone who sells food and beer in Haad Rin will see a big spike once a month.

The taxi mafia.

The police who benefit from naive 'Big mama' era backpackers who still think it's 1998 and that it's safe to smoke and buy weed on the beach or those fresh of the boat (literally) who end up contributing to the police retirement fund.

The boat and speedboat operators.

To a lesser extent the other beaches/areas such as Ban Thai also benefit with the over-spill but Haad Rin is the main beneficiary. Even Samui and Tao will feel the effects and an increase in tourist numbers.

Seriously speaking, and I am not trying to be nasty in any way - do yourself a favour and get a flight down to Australia's northern states - Queensland or maybe even the northern parts of Western Australia. There are some nice areas in northern NSW too - lovely clean and empty beaches, island nature reserves and beautiful national parks.

Australia is a bit of an expensive place to live, but I can guarantee that you will find some wonderful sites (and sights). Might be best to wait a little while until the hottest part of the year (and the bushfires) are over though...

I love Thailand, which I have adopted as my home for the last 20 years, but being an Australian, and having travelled around the place quite a bit, I can honestly recommend it as a place to see - just maybe not the place to live.

I actually lived on KPG for just under 3 years late 90s, got fed up with the plastic hippies and the parties.

As for Tao my home for last 10 years and the party. With my own eyes I saw no more than 50 granted it was daytime,Last year wasn't much better. But still I can count and my estimation was less than 50.

Ahhh a 'sphere of influence' question, I knew my geography degree wouldn't be wasted. So what we need to do is put together a 5-10 minute questionnaire and hit all the parties and ask questions such as 'where are you staying?' and 'how did you travel to the party?'. Maybe the Thai government will sponsor me to do a thesis and Phd?? Or possibly not.

One thing for sure, those of us with serious business interests based on tourism feel the effects of negative publicity.

Negative publicity brought about by the events caused by stupidity and greed. Such as the uk press picking up on the latest shooting.

10 years plus ago the Fmp was a mainstay attraction down here, vital even I'd say to a large number of businesses.. However things move on Kpg now has upmarket resorts an infrastructure of sorts same as Tao and Samui. Just look at the transport links now several ferry companies airports at chumporn - Surat - Samui.

Personally I feel Fmp has run its course, it's no longer vital.To a point it now does overall more harm than good.

Also consider that the real party scene is no longer seeing Fmp as anything special, to commercial etc etc.Sure there's a few old has beens hanging on, and some new wide eyed kid saying wow best thing ever. But IMO Fmp is now mostly gap year kids with a to do list getting pissed and extorted at every corner.

Still each to there own, and as for the age thing anguid believe me I have had it large so to speak several times this last year.Not a dayglo painted teenager, corrupt police man or plastic hippy in sight.Just as the Fmp used to be in the 90s

Most of us expats probably dont care much about it but allot of smaller business do bounce of this party. looking at the numbers of people coming off the boat all need taxis. allot need a plan at some point or a bus. or if they decide to stay in samui or come back to samui then the hotels and money changers benifit all the way to the massage palors. Well everything. the more tourists that come to a business island based on toursime makes better business.

Isn't it a bit like buying or renting a house next to an airport runway and then start complaining about the noise and questioning whom the airport may benefit.

The FullMoon party has been at Had Rhin longer than most other things on Koh Phangan. If you don't like parties and noise, stay somewhere else than the party area – even at Koh Phangan there are plenty of beautifull paradise beaches at other parts of the island. And be happy, that all the young party-folks goes to Had Rhin and not "your" beach. Turnover from some 10.000+ party guests do benefit the local people.

By the way, Had Rhin beach is very nice and not crowded the other some 25 days of the month.

FMP might actually benefit those who like a less developped island as most non party goers stay away and instead go to Kho Thao / Samui... Haven't been to KPG in a couple years but went a few times and just stayed away from Had Rin, had a great time!

By the way has it developed much in the past 2 years? I heard about an airport project and some new hotels... How's life in Chakoklum these days? (sorry if name/spelling not right)
