Santana to return to Thailand; will be joined by special guest, Carabao

BANGKOK: -- Latin-rock guitar legend Carlos Santana is returning to Bangkok to perform a concert at Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani on March 6, 2013, which will also feature special guest, veteran Thai rock band, Carabao.

BEC-Tero has brought Santana to Thailand on three previous occasions – enjoying sell out Bangkok shows in 1986, 2003 and 2011. The guitar legend’s list of classic songs include smash hits Smooth, The Game of Love, Black Magic Women, Gypsy Queen, Oye Como Va, Jingo, Maria Maria, and more.

The “Santana: The Sentient Tour” concert in March 2013 will also feature legendary Thai folk/rock band, Carabao, as special guest. Carabao are avowed big fans of Santana and even paid tribute to the latin-rock legend in a special album entitled “Carabao Santana (Sam-Cha Latin)” in 1999.

Saw him the last time he toured and I was very disappointed that the show consisted mainly of the grammy-winning pop-rock crap like Smooth.

The times have certainly changed from the days in SF when you could listen to Santana jam on Sundays for $1.50.

I was his family's paperboy (San Francisco Chronicle) before he was discovered.

I saw the group grow from the filmore in SF. Of course it is not the same but, Carlos can still play play play that instrument... Enjoy the show in Thailand if you can buy the tickets see him. One day he wil stop touring. I think he is now 65 tears old. I missed out seeing Elvis my sister saw him in Las Vegas and put on a great show..

I remember those days.. sometimes he would go to the park and play for free. those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.

Having tripped down memory lane... I would love to see them and my favorite Thai band together..

I'm from San Rafael myself, but moved to San Diego 5 years ago. While I never saw Carlos in Marin county, a couple of my friends told of being picked up by him while hitchhiking.

The true Santana (as you will gather from comments here) was the band that brought out those first three classic albums with Carlos playing alongside Gregg Rolie, Michael Carabello, Michael Shrieve etc. I guess seeing Carlos play now is like seeing Paul McCartney play....you won't get the full picture, but glimpses of a great past is better than nothing.

One of the best places to live! I miss it a lot. Once I was almost run over by Phil Lesh crossing the street (in a cross walk). What a great day that was.

Yep! wouldn't surprise me a bit. Santana is a genuine human being and hasn't let wealth or fame cloud his third eye. LOL

Last time I saw him in Bangkok he told the audience "stop letting all those fat, German tourists shag your young women" (or words to that effect) and half the audience 'ah hmm-ed', ran their fingers through what was left of their hair and looked at each other nervously.

Yep, with Jose "Chepito" Areas too. And on the third album, Santana III, with teenage prodigy Neal Schon and master percussionist Coke Escevedo, who, sadly, is no longer with us.

Actually reading it again, I feel I need to make myself clearer. I certainly agree that those first three albums were indeed classics, but I disagree - and please correct me if I've misunderstood - as you seem to be implying that his later work was no match for them. Who is the true Santana? Every human being changes and evolves and IMHO Carlos went on to produce some incredible work in his later albums. Like the 1981 album Zebop.

This track, Hannibal, is one of my favorite Santana songs. Carlos himself said it's among his finest work. Amazing solo from 2.00:

And like Moonflower, which reached #10 on the Billboard charts and also went platinum, one of my all-time favorite albums. This music critic says, "This double album of mixed live and studio tracks might be all the Santana you need. For a change, Carlos takes up most of the solo space rather than spotlighting less talented musicians, and as usual his playing is brilliant ... Santana's at his best here, which should be good enough for anybody."

Greg Walker, whom many (myself included), regard as the band's best ever vocalist, really shines on this track, I'll Be Waiting:

Moonflower also produced a hit single, a cover of the 60s Zombies classic She's Not There. This is the original album version, containing the percussion jam (3.08) which was omitted on the single release:

Could be, it does appear he tailors the set to suit the audience. I was recently watching his show in Montreux (same tour) and he did different ones there as well.

The only decent album this bore ever recorded was caravanserai in 1972, the guy is a dinosaur.He's just lucky he did not die out years ago and that there are still people who want to relive their youth by paying to see him. There are Thai guitar players far better, but falangs are usually too lazy to find out about them. He's well teamed up with carabao though-two boring old farts together for the price of one.
