Simpsons 'trump' First Amendment

Featured Replies

Americans know more about The Simpsons TV show than the US Constitution's First Amendment, an opinion poll says.

Only one in four could name more than one of the five freedoms it upholds but more than half could name at least two members of the cartoon family.

About one in five thought the right to own a pet was one of the freedoms.

I've always suspected the origins of some of the political views expressed on Thaivisa.

Doh !!

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie.

The Right to Arm Bears ? The Right to Privacy ? Free Speech ?

I don't have a clue what the First Amendment guarantees, but then, I'm not American !

The Simpsons writer was much less stiff than the guy who wrote the Constitution. :o

Maybe they should make a first admendment comedy show , play it every sunday at 7:00 .

This is the result of 30 years of the American left "dumbing down" the public school system, and the American right and millions of parents standing by and allowing it to happen. It is a national disgrace.

The current objective of the American public education system is to shovel kids through the system, making sure that they graduate with their age group, rather than focusing on making sure that they meet basic learning goals when they do graduate. As one who spent a lot of time tutoring kids in big city schools, I've seen it first hand.

It does nothing but promote laziness and apathy in the general student population. If children are not held to basic standards and expectations in school as they grow up, then how are they ever going to learn how to meet basic standards and expectations as adults? More importantly, when they become parents, how are they going to be able to set standards for their children when they themselves have none?

Stories of people graduating from American high schools with 3rd grade reading level or 8th grade math skills are a national embarassment. Heck, I even see it in the corporate business world, when senior managers of major companies don't even know proper format and grammar for a memorandum or press announcement. Allowing kids to get by with a crappy education is the primary risk to America's future.

I've even seen this in my own family. When I first met my Thai honey and was explaining to my family where she was from, one of my brothers actually thought that Thailand and Taiwan were the same place, some island out in the ocean. It was really embarassing.

Eddie Murphy could play George Washington to show how politically correct we were back then. :o

Yes , it could be directed by Spike Lee :o

Hope this doesn't shock you; but I agree.

At least Bart doesn't claim to be more popular than Jesus.

He's more popular than John Lennon. :o

What do you think....a cartoon John Lennon and Yoko Onno interacting with Bart and Lisa? I think that Bart and Lisa would shred them!! They had cartoon Paul and Linda on before...

You must have never seen the episode that was on in the UK yesterday. In a past life, Homer belonged to a barbershop quartet called "The Be Sharps." George Harrison (RIP) was in it. And once Barney became a star as the lead singer, he acquired a girlfriend who appeared to be a takeoff on Yoko Ono. They even did a rooftop sequence a la The Beatles. George went by in the limo, looked out, saw it, and said "Been done!"

I'll bet that some people even think that Extreme Akim and his Bat of Justice are for real.

The Right to Arm Bears ? The Right to Privacy ? Free Speech ?

"The right to Trial by Jury" (in most cases) & "Freedom of Religion" & some more.

The Bill of Rights are the first 10 Amendements to the Constitution and there are currently 27 ammendments. I know this stuff 'cause the wife is going for her US Citizenship and we've been going over it. You learn it all in school but when it comes time to recall like 20 - 30 years later... :o

Homer, Apu, Barney, and Skinner did in "The B-Sharps" episode. :o

I saw the Fox clip about this poll, where only 1 person out of 1,000 could name the 5 Rights listed in the 1st Amendment.

The laugher was how many people thought that the Right to Own a Pet was one of those rights ! :D

As Boon mentions, people learn this stuff in school. But then they rarely have to think about it again.

As a poll question, I wouldn't use a question like this as a guage to determine how smart people are, or as a barometer of the state of the education system.

I'll bet most of those people could name all 3 judges on American Idol though ! (Hint, Barry Bonds isn't one of them) :D

I love when Howard Stern plays "The Homeless Game" and asks them simple questions like who is the current Vice President or how much does a local newspaper cost and they don't know. :o

I've even seen this in my own family.

We believe you :D

What make you think that your family ignorance is different from yours ? :o

No wonder Americans were tricked into believing the war on Iraq was about Democracy :D

Viva the Patriot Act !!! :o

The right to bear arms?

Rip off their sleeves!

What about killing innocent civilians, but only if they are foreigners, or muslims, or both

what about the right to invade other countries illegally ? it must be in the Constitution because Bush jr said so in his SOUA :D

The Right to Arm Bears ?

Still chuckling over that, thx :D

Well, it's the sporting thing to do ! Poor old buggers try to enjoy a leisurely lifestyle, fishing, eating berries, stealing honey (and picnic baskets), when suddenly wanna be Rambo shows up with an elephant rifle and blows the old feller away.

Arming Bears would be a little difficult. Getting them to register their arms would be even harder ! :o

I've even seen this in my own family.

You are walking a very thin line butterfly. Nobody's arguing your right to speak your opinion but if you're going to take cheap shots at members' families, that right will be curtailed. :D

I just found it to be funny and ironic that someone making fun and complaining about his family ignorance, was also "famous" for being very prejudiced and "naive" (to be polite) about the world in general. I wasn't making fun of his family, which I don't know. For all I know, they could be "liberals" and anti-Bush :D
