Dictionary On Smartphone...

Featured Replies

Thinking about buying a decent dictionary for English to Thai translation so when I think I need to say something I can look up and try to pronounce it to Thai... Don't want to spend extra for separate electronic dictionary...looking into app I can install on smartphone. I am willing to spend up to 2000 bath for app on either iOS or android.

Talking Thai by Paiboon Publishing.

If memory serves the iOS version is about £30.

It has more words than you will ever need and it has sound - it speaks the Thai words to give you accurate pronunciation.

Excellent app and worth the money.

I don't use the talking function.

It is still an excellent dctionary with a good selection of words and has the Thai in both Thai font and also phonetics which helps if you are learning to read / write Thai

Unless you can read Thai accurately, the speaking function is very handy as transliterations of Thai into phonetics using the ABC alphabet are very problematic - the app gives a spoken version with the tones and syllables very clearly pronounced. If you CAN read Thai accurately, firstly I still recommend the app as its a very comprehensive dictionary anyway, and secondly well done for getting that ability under your belt.

Also should mention that the app only really does single words and some simple related phrases - for a good way to translate complete sentences, if you have an Internet connection on your phone, I recommend :

thai2english.com

or

thai-language.com

Both have some sound function also and offer more useful translation of sentences and phrases than google(IMHO).

This is a free one and it works great. If you want to go from Thai to English, you need to install a Thai keyboard. I haven't tried using it to speak Thai but it speaks English very well. It works great if I am in a store and don't know the word for something I want to buy. It's a big download because you don't have to be online to use it.

seconded. it's a great app. easily beats any electronic dictionary out there so paying $25 for it is a steal.

Thirded (smile.png ) I have it both on the ipad and Android. Well worth it and she recorded all the Thai sounds.
