Buying British Currency At Airport

Featured Replies

Can someone confirm that I could buy about 1000 British pounds at Suvarnabhumi instantly without the need to order in advance? Also, is it best to pay for them in baht notes (about 44000) or on debit card? Thanks.

Probably a much worse rate than a normal exchange or bank.

I think there are ATMs at Swampy that dispense foreign currency, but I haven't tried them.

Yes you can at any of the currency exchange booths at the departure level.

My thanks to you.

Forget about paying 44000 baht. Expect to pay at least 45.31 baht for each Pound purchased at the airport.

SCB and TMB, with exclusive financial services rights at SBIA/BKK, do offer poorer rates at the airport locations - not sure if this is paid as a concession. So if SCB is 45.45875 on their website, and at other branches, the rate at SBIA/BKK is always +1 THB (exactly), so 46.45875; both also add exactly 1 baht to the USD rate. A double-whammy of sorts vis-a-vis a money changer in town like Super Rich (green or orange), both of which are showing 45.10 on their web-sites.

There are some other money changers on the basement level only (airport rail-link) which might offer more competitive rates?

Changing money at airports is always a rip off. Everything in airports cost more due to the premium paid for renting the premises for the sevices offered. I only ever do it if I have to leave at short notice and then only chage the minimum amount. Best to use a bank or money changer if you have the time to check around.

I reckon at the airport you will be paying 47/48. Not sure but Bangkok bank is about 45.3 so you can add at least 2 THB to that minimum.

Why not buy at a bank the day before or on way to airport?

The best place for buying currency is Superrich in Bangkok !!! You can check the rates real time online.

If you are going to use a debit card why don't you wait till you get to London/England and use the many ATM's at the airport.

= better rate + you can change monies as you like and wont have to carry £1,000 in your pocket.
