Ban tourists over 50 or certify they are wealthy before they are allowed to get a ticket to Thailand.

Don't most tourists take out some sort of travel insurance covering illness and emergency treatment?

If you want to reduce hospital costs incurred by uninsured tourists, you should ban motorbike rentals That would also make roads a little safer.

You appear to be the first person touching on the theme that immediately sprung to my mind; the route problem is that approximately 10% of "tourists" are having to visit hospitals, etc. for medical treatment. They need to address THAT (frankly rather shocking issue) and the problem reduces considerably. Fix the proximate cause, e.g. health & safety, proper driving tests, law enforcement, education, etc......

Been here a fair old while and I have always maintained a healthy bank balance in order to negate any possible problems from being ill.It has proved sufficient up to now, but I must admit, some form of cover may well be a good idea as I approach the old 50.

Check out BUPA Thailand. I pay THB 60,000 per year for coverage up to 5 Million and includes O.P.D. doctor visits, meds, etc. This is their Platinum level - much cheaper options exist. I've been with them for a decade now and renew every year as their service and coverage is great - even out of country I can get reimbursed traveling to the EU, etc. except for the US which is not covered due to their horrendously expensive medical care.

This is another pile of complete crap, the real motive is trying to fleece tourists for an extra fee/donation

how so ?...how can they get extra fee'/donation's if said tourists get the insurance in their own countries before they travel ? or are you sugesting a conspriracy between all international insurance providers in all the countries in all the world and the Thai Goverment ? rolleyes.gif

for the most part the goverment comes up with a lot of crack pot ideas...but this one for once makes perfect sense, make all Non Thai nationals, living and visiting Thailand have medical insurance

but very easy to solve, if related to long term "residents" of Thailand...evey year when renewing ones visa a bond amount is lodged with Thai immigration, the amount in bond would be similar to what people pay on average annually for decent medical insurance...thereby building up a pool of cash to pay for people who have no insurance, of course this is Thailand, so we may expect officals putting there hands in the till as well..biggrin.png

You've got an active imagination. There won't be any bond program.

if there is no alternative for those who cant get medical insurance, one would expect fewer of these people being in Thailand then, as they cant get a visa, so this is also a viable solution as well....serves the same purpose...wink.png

please understand I not having a go at you but....

Cant see what the problem getting insurance, my parents, although not in Thailand, are older than you and have private medical insurance which they pay for themselves and my mother is on chronic medication for BP, diabetes and had a hip replacement a couple of years ago....in the country they live in, there is no law which forces insurance company to insure older people either.....so is it a case cant get it or dont want to pay for it ?

I stay here semi perm, I cannot get insured, If I returned to England I could take out an insurance for 90 days only, any existing condition is a no no. I want to pay no probs. As it is I can manage on savings if in the event I have to be admitted. BUT the point is if they say it's compulsory what then ????
