Upgrading A German Iphone 4 To A Later Version Of Ios ?

Featured Replies

Hi,

A friend of mine, here in Chiang Mai, has an iPhone 4, purchased for him by his son in Germany.

He had the iPhone "jail-broken" here in Thailand, is currently running iOS 3.10.01, using AIS as is service provider.

He has been told by local Chiang Mai iFolks that his German origin iPhone cannot be upgraded to a newer version of iOS in Thailand; I personally doubt that is true.

On behalf of my friend, I 'd appreciate any advice here on how (or where to go) to get his iOS upgraded, while still enabling him to use it here in Thailand.

thanks ! ~o:37;

Have another look at which ios version he has 3.10.01 isn't right. Look in settings, general, about and then the version section. Should be 5. Something or 6. Something

You're right, daniel2183.

3.10.01 is a Modem Firmware version a.k.a. a baseband version.

Upgrading iOS firmware changes Modem Firmware unless it's preserved by appropriate software.

Upgrading to a newer iOS might mean an upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 when conventionally done as it has been reported that the signing of iOS 6.1.2 has stopped. At the moment iOS 6.1.3 cannot be jailbroken.

Sawasdee Khrup,

Thanks for the comments, Khun Daniel2183, and Khun Aidenai ! While I am quite expert on the PC side of the equation, as I am sure you've already realized, I don't know jack about the Mac :)

My friend tells me that his iPhone 4's iOS is apparently 4.2.1 (8C148).

Is there any later version of iOS which he can upgrade to while still being able to use the phone in Thailand ?

Yes you can, but if your not too familiar the the process I would get a shop to do it. I'm pretty sure he can go up to 6.1.2 and jailbreak it .

Was the phone locked to a carrier ? Where was it bought ? If direct from apple themselves it will be unlocked to any network without the need for a jailbreak.

He can't go to 6.1.2 because Apple has stopped signing the firmware. Stay on the current firmware until another jailbreak is released (not likely to be anytime soon).

Can he just go to 6.0 or something like that and then wait ?

Nope. He can only go to other versions when he has shsh blobs.

He can go for 6.1.3 and do a tethered jaibreak with Redsn0w.

Sawasdee Khrup, Khun Aidenai,

Thanks, again, for your valuable comments.

Is there a specific shop in Bangkok (perhaps in Mahboonkrong, or Pornthip Plaza ?) that you would recommend to upgrade to 6.1.3, and get it jail-broken ?

I assume the computer running RedsnOw software will be the shop's computer: if he pulls his sim-card out, prior to upgrade and jailbreak, for privacy reasons, would that still allow the procedure ?

yours, ~o:37;

OP - do you really want a tethered jailbreak? Do you even know what it is? Stay on your current firmware until a proper jailbreak is released.

If the sim card is in or not it makes no difference when jailbreaking . but You don't want to go to 6.1.3 because its a tethered jailbreak. Meaning that everytime you turn on your iphone it needs to be connected to your computer and run through a programme otherwise it wont boot up. So best thing to do wait for a untethered jailbreak which is what your friend has got now.
