March 30, 201312 yr Below is a link to a video of an interview in Australia. There maybe an opportunity here for small growers like many here for value adding and servicing this niche. FYI- Woolworths & Coles mentioned dominate the supermarkets in Oz. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-03-30/consumer-backlash-over-palm-oil-hot-cross-buns/4601930
March 31, 201312 yr Good interview and she made the point that palm oil is not necessarily bad it is just the unsustainable way it is grown destroying the rainforest habitat. Palm oil is not the only culprit but any mono-culture agri business is similar. Take the train from Singapore to KL to see what Palm oil monoculture looks like at it's worse. We still haven't learnt the lessons from the past .
March 31, 201312 yr I have come to the conclusion that if our civilisation doesnt change its reliance of oil that the word sustainable may have to be redefined. Palm is taking over rainforest but yields a (sustainable) renewable source of oil with a high percentage of the byproducts capable of being used. It may just be that we have to settle for more "unnatural" forests that yield more of the needs of man.
March 31, 201312 yr Some of the world's first smallholder, certified, sustainable oil palm growers are in Plai Praya, Krabi. They are certified by the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm oil). It's only a small group, but it is a start.
