'her dad was killed in the war and it was never clear which side he was on...she never wanted to speak of it...'

there is an excellent ethnographical short history called 'Juan the Chamula' that describes the activities of Juan who is an indigenous person from southern mexico and his travails in an environment of constant violence during the civil conflicts in the early 20th century and I was reminded of that when I asked 'Linda' about her dad's political allegiance and she looked at me blankly...

I just had a mango salad for my lunch.......aroy mak mak. i've never had one before and this thread motivated me to try it biggrin.png

There were these wee tiny dried out and salted Thai northern prawns in the salad, I've had them before but not as dried and salted, they were amazing!! it was just a plate full of taste. Thanks for the tip Tutsi.

Anyway my Thai is mai dee......the guy in the cafe takes pity on me and today he taught me " tom tum dao oo salat ", at least that's what I think he said.....itv was tofu, pork and seaweed soup, and I loved it. Thais just make delicious food look easy. licklips.gif

ps. Don't shout at me if my transliteration is crap, I'm trying my best. sad.png

I had a green mango som tam once and it was quite nice...and I don't like som tam...

just got back from the market where there's an old chinese chap that sells voddy out of 'licensing hours' and I had also bought some fresh tofu and he looked and said 'aloy?' and I went thru a pantomime of preparing a veg and tofu stir fry...he was fascinated or maybe he just thought it amazing that a fat old falang bastid like meself could cook with the local ingredients...

and I renewed my driving license so that it was a productive day...

mangoes in the UK were appalling, foced-ripened and tasted like wet cardboard half the time, but, when needs must.....So lastnight we ambled down to the local market here in CM and had the most amazing mango shake....so good that after the meal, I had a second one.... Man, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Back for another fix tonight. tongue.png
