Residents near the controversial Letpadaung copper mine in Monywa, northwest Burma, have continued protesting after applying for permission from authorities, Mizzima news agency reported on Monday. About 500 protesters peacefully marched from Tone Ywar village to Nyaung Pin Gyi port on Friday to demonstrate against the project, the news agency said. They carried signs with slogans urging authorities to shut down the mine and punish “explosive bomb offenders,†referring to police who cracked down on peaceful protesters last year with incendiary devices. An official committee tasked with investigating the crackdown recommended that the mining project continue.
