[Myanmar] Draft Press Law Up For Revision

A controversial draft of Burma’s new press law is up for revision, according to Unesco. The Printing and Publishing Bill was submitted by the Ministry of Information to Parliament on Feb. 27, with no input from local media groups. Critics have since said the bill’s restrictions threatened to roll back press freedoms only recently reinstated in the country. Deliberation on the legislation was suspended after a public outcry. The revisions reportedly include greater emphasis on citizens’ freedom of expression and the removal of provisions criticized as “vague,†which could be used to censor or induce self-censorship.
