Surely this is another reminder of how important it is we sign a solid midfielder in the summer. Gerrard will be away and Lucas has been unlucky over the last few seasons with Injuries. Allen is doing a job at the moment but he's a bit lightweight to be a defensive midfielder.

you'd assume that is the plan for emre can long term. although an actual specialist defensive midfielder is something we lack in the absence of lucas. i don't think that the 3 at the back thing is a long term solution so if we revert to 4-2-3-1 then we'll need another body in that two.

Stevie altho our results have improved remarkably since Brendan adopted the 3 at the back we need quicker men than Kolo & Lovren . Whilst our results are so good reckon Brendan will stick with this system , shame we cannot call on Ilori he is made to measure for it .

Lovren just sort of drops the ball onto the spot ,takes a step back and the ball rolls back...His head was never on the job or he simply pished his pants in front of class,foooking embarrassing.

I only woke up 02:15 it was 1-0 Besiktas , watched the 30 mins x-time then pen shoot-out . Not blaming Lovren . The manager takes full responsibility for me . Now we must go all out for top 4 finish & maybe FA cup .

i just hoped we'd lose in regulation time, going to be some tired boys on Sunday. Could be a blessing in disguise with Spurs being knocked out also. I think they are the biggest threat for 4th spot.

Still cannot fathom how Lovrenwas up so early.

Lovren has problems passing, never a penalty taker, sorry Brendon he has turned out to be a waste of money, but will be difficult to move on.

sterling's one of the very best young players in europe. you don't base getting him signed up to a new long-term contract on whether or not he takes a penalty in a shootout, particularly after he's already missed one this season against 'boro. skrtel was captain, why wasn't he up? kolo toure was on the pitch, hugely experienced senior pro who scored a peno in the ACN recently. using this as a stick to beat sterling with seems silly.

What a stupid comment! Penalty shoot outs call for players who are confident in their ability to score under pressure. International caps or indeed talent, do not come into the equation. (See Paul Ince for example). As Sterling had missed his previous one, it's perfectly understandable that he wasn't happy about taking one last night. It does make me laugh that guys on keyboards think football is such an easy game!

For the record...I was <deleted> but, I never ever missed a penalty in a competitive game, (was the Balotelli of tekkers) or indeed one of the 3 shoot outs I was involved in. Eat your heart out Raheem

One good thing about Sunday`s game is the kick off time 11:30 UK / 18:30 here . I only found out yesterday Martin Skrtel was capitano vs. Besiktas He would be skipper before Hendo for me .
