British Politics

Featured Replies

Okay, So I am watching this documentary on Discovery Times about new white supremacists movements in America and Europe. They talk about the British National Party, who according to this show held a image of skinheads back in 1997 and thus wasn't making any headway politically. SO, they change their image and now they are winning seats, despite the fact that many of it's members, leading members even, are hosting Nazi camps in their homes.

I am wondering how any self-respecting British citizen could carry the Nazi banner?

I am also wondering about the BNP and what they are doing to gain seats and become a political power, what is their platform?

On a side note, the British white power band White Law in this show went to Germany to perform, at the request of Nazis there. The documentary didn't go into detail, but mentioned that there was a Neo-Nazi party in Germany which was producing elected officials. One of these nut jobs was talking about one day the Nazi party being the main power within the German government.

How could this happen?

Bunch of nutters... how else can one explain them?

That is what I would like to say, but according to this documentary British people are voting form them. It didn't say how much support they had, but enough to gain seats in the government.

The British National Party (BNP) is the largest political party of the far right in the United Kingdom. Unlike some of its European analogues, it has no presence in the national Parliament, and a small number of councillors in local government; some claim that this is partially because the UK's first-past-the-post system makes it harder for small parties to achieve electoral success than the proportional representation systems used in most of Europe. According to accounts filed with the Electoral Commission for the year 2004, it had a membership of 7,916, and income and expenditure of around £730,000.

First of all, anything "Nazi" is illegal in Germany (controversial, but understandable given the historic background), what you'd find are the legal versions of affiliates who strain themselves to stay within legality.

The Brits are more tolerant, and the extremists cash in on recent events and the flaring anti-Islam sentiments. Some threads in the news section of this forum show the sort of arguments they use.

How could this happen? The short answer is: we don't know - there are many contributing aspects: lack of education, social environment, unemployment, modern 'Angst', racial, cultural and religious differences, looking for scapegoats, fear of open borders and 'invasions' of outsiders taking advantage, the list goes on...

The scaring thing about it is that it's not just teenage skinheads who can't count to ten, but highly educated and intelligent people from the middle and wealthy strands of society as well.

The BNP have no seats in national government. They do have a very few seats in local goverment. They win those seats on the back of complaints that some of the ethnic minorities in this country will not attempt to intergrate into UK life and live in self created ghettos. They are a thoroughly unpleasant bunch but I suspect that the TV programme you watched made more if them than they're actually worth.

So, I guess that means they are not that influential? 7,916 isn't all that much in the face of the British population and 750,000 doesn't seem that much for a political party.

That's what I thought. At this concert that the police were trying to break up though the organizer was talking about the progress made by the Nazi party. The narrator of the documentary even said the Nazi party was gaining in the German goverment, but they didn't go into detail.

I think that maybe you're right, but the documentary itself was about hate music. So, they covered an American record company that was producing these bands and then some on the bands themselves, like White Law from Britian. So, they didn't really get into the politics, they only mentioned the BNP and it's support from fans if the hate music.

How did that happen ? because many people hate freedom and like the idea of a clean dictatorship, this is the sad truth. They need leadership and role models in a world they can't always understand. The dictatorship provides a "shield" against those changes and a security that things will be kept simple and cleaned. That's all they want. A "secure" place to call home. And that home is best served under a totalitarian regime.

Why do you think they called it the Homeland Security :o

These neo nazi s are a bunch of w******, i watched a program on that young guy from leeds or somewhere who ran a big campaign and got found out by undercover reporters. P***K.

:D:o

Seen V for Vendetta? - think Butterfy would love this film! :D

The BNP were formed by several characters who left the National Front (a very similar outfit): the BNP will say that they were disillusioned with the NF who had been shown to be racist thugs; the NF will say that the BNP were expelled for being racist thugs - same meat, different gravy.

The few places where the BNP have won council seats (local government) have factors in common: high unemployment, high dependency on welfare payments, high proportions of ethnic minorities, poor housing, poor education - all the socio-economic factors that provide fertile soil for xenophobia and demonisation, negative stereotyping and so on. It is very reminiscent of 1930s Nazi behaviour towards the Jews. It's also a handy place for thugs to get their kicks.

Us Brits are generally pretty tolerant and dislike this kind of behaviour, but it creeps in here and there. In local elections during the mid-90s, I remember all 3 party leaders saying "if you don't want to vote for the Labour/Conservative/LibDem candidate, fine - just don't vote for the BNP".

No, but planning to see it. From the trailer, I wasn't too impressed. Not realistic and I can see the Hollywood ending already. I hope I am wrong. I will buy it from patpong to be sure I am not wasting money

I think you are giving too much credit to some sensationalist reporting.

I am not denying the existence of right-wing nationalist parties in Britain nor Germany, but it looks like your source is not very informed about the legal framework, nor the proportion of these phenomena on the overall political scale.

There is no "Nazi Party" in German parliament, and the BNP is a small minority in Britain. Let's hope it will stay that way.

I am not saying these tendencies aren't worth of discussion, but let's look at it in perspective.

That's why I posted this thread. I didn't trust the program. They made the BNP and these German Neo-Nazis out to be a growing threat, and I just couldn't believe that a majority would follow these groups, not after every that happen during the war. I know the memories of WWII are even more fresh in the minds of Europeans than Americans, and I just couldn't see that people would go for this on a large scale.

Rather good, and if a film was ever made by you, this would be the one you'd make for certain. :D

How good does Portman look bald?

Very important point to note BNP stands for British National Party not British Nazi party (although in my opinion they are Nazi!). So no carrying the Swastika around the streets!!!

However, what little coverage they do get shows them to be a very nasty bunch. They play on people's fears and play a propaganda card which is laughable. They are total racists, bigots and anti-Semites.

In some comunities they manage a very small presence, through making themselves as 'normal' as possible, masquerading as civilised people.

Engaging in conversation with them is frightening. They don't accept that they are racist or anti-Semite while saying in the same breath that they want to rid the country of anyone with dark skin or Semite beliefs. Shocking...

How good does Portman look bald?

Lovely for a skinhead! :o (much better w/long hair IMHO)
