"Police loosed water cannons and tear gas on rioting students and activists rampaged through a McDonald's and attacked store fronts in the capital Saturday as demonstrations against a plan to relax job protections spread in a widening arc across France."

How completely unaware they must be not to realize the numbers of folks worldwide who had their first job at McDonald’s, developed useful WORK HABITS (like showing up on time and cooperating,) and as a result, and actually WENT ON TO OTHER THINGS. :o

What is it with protestors and MacDonalds ? :o

Everywhere you go, it seems to be the favourite target, regardless of the reason for the protest. Maybe they think it is a super huge chain that can easily pay to rebuild ? Most of these idiots don't have a clue about what kind of damage they do to the local economies when they trash these places.

Then again, most of those idiots don't have a clue as to why they are protesting in the first place. They are just mindless sheep, being herded by the small number of wolves in the crowd that are looking for trouble.

Clueless and Stupid.

Nah, it's just france being french again. One reason I never fly AF is the chances your flight is cancelled due to strikes is huge. Som nam nah france.

Do you know what the protests were about BM?

The government were trying to pass a law that ment that an employer could fire an employee (Under the age of 26 I think) and not have to give any reason. Fair enough to protest in my book.It made the govt. cave in!

They were trying to kick start the economy. :o How about a couple of tax breaks then... :D

I think Paris has a lot of problems. Last November they had the riots when those 2 kids were accidentally electrocuted while running from the police.

Then there were riots when the government suggested raising the work hours per week from 38.5 to 40 hours per week.

Now this one, which seems to be the only one with a valid reason.

It started off with university students, but according to Sky News this morning, poor youths from the same neighbourhoods involved in the November riots have started joining in.

Hmmm, is this a sign that leftist, Socialist governments aren't working ?

Jaques Chirac = a leftist, socialist leader. :D:D

Yeah, I could be wrong there. Perhaps I was thinking of France a few years ago or something. I just got the impression that things hadn't changed much (as far as their way of thinking is concerned).

Of course, I could argue that the problems being seen today are the result of previous, leftist/Socialist governments.

Would that be more accurate ?

(I don't pay too much attention to France obviously :D )

The new government is a conservative one. Actually the PM is not really a conservative, he is a center right, more like a loyal public servant who will follow whatever Chirac give him as orders.

He is the guy who stood up to the Bush administration in the UN Iraq conflict. He is very well spoken and articulate. He probably doesn't agree with the labor law reform but like I said he is a loyal public servant, and will follow Chirac order. He was planning to run for the next Presidential election, so I think this is one of Chirac dirty trick to "discredit" Villepin for the next election.

Anyway, the labor reform is stupid because as soon as it becomes laws, employers will use it to abuse the labor markets like they always did, and McD will be the first corporation to make extensive use of that law, alienating thousands more workers than they do already.

Let's burn the McD and torch the city !!! the students are right. Too bad their rally was joined by the "ghettos" kids who are only there to break cars and torch everything on their way.

"Real" means you can be fired for incompetence.

What a novel concept, eh? :o

These kids need to grow up and get a life of their own.

The government isn't there to provide them with one.

Ehh, still not quite there.

The protests were about the gov removing basic workers rights.

Seems the lack of support for standard European laws by the conservative gov triggered the protests... :o

Yes, I understand that.

What I meant was that France's previous experience with left-leaning Socialists has left in in a position that is now in.

Had they adopted a more conservative form of government years ago, we might not be seeing the problems we do now.

Now you have a conservative government trying to right the wrongs (?) of the previous system, and the people are rioting (not just this riot, but the previous ones as well).

I agree that this new labour law sucks (from what little I know about it). Some employers will no doubt take advantage of the workers (even though that would result in higher turn-over rates at some places).

But the riots over a 1.5 hour (paid) increase in the standard work week (to a whopping 40 hours per week ! Where's my riot gear dear !) ?

The major riots that broke out when 2 immigrant kids were accidentally electrocuted while running from the police ?

Yes, the major forces behind these demonstrations are 1) socialist organisations that are extreamly afraid of loosing any power at all, nomatter what it is and for what use and 2) hoodlings that just want to trash things.

Same everywhere in Europe as soon as there is something...

What the government is advocating, is the ability to fire a young person without a reason.I would have thought that a person of your experience would understand that this law WILL get abused.

imagine this.

Employer 1 to pretty young girl: "give me a blowjob"

pretty young girl: "No way you ugly bastard"

Employer 1: "Your fired"

On second thought, it is a great law. :D

The more the French dig their feet in against the obvious need to change, the more of their work will go else where (a significant proportion heading to the UK).

I hope the French continue on this path for many years to come. But watch out, at sometime in the future they will realize they can no longer keep themselves and at that point they will start coming up with plans for a Europe Wide Welfare Fund.

Oh yeah, like that stopped US corporation from outsourcing their jobs in a work environment where labors laws are almost inexistant

nice argument, really :o

Of course, one of the "sheep" wouldn't be able to look beyond the obvious...

You on a 'mission' here zzap?

Recall how you seem to take 'vacations' whenever you start bashing folks? :o

French youths will soon get jobs cleaning the streets in Beijing

Or fixing the leaky faucets in Warsaw (due payback for French racism regarding Polish plumbers). While much of the world enjoys economic expansion, Old Europe implodes like a house of cards. :o

Sorry Boon Me, I had to edit your post, it had a typo and it didn't make any sense

Just like the unemployed no-gooders who couldn't pull any girls in the States, signed up to peel the potatoes and felt they were given a direction in life...

Don't forget the unemployed no-gooders who couldn't pull any girls anywhere who were too uneducated and too pussy to get in the Military and never had any direction in life - real wastrels.

Why is it that the only possible reason that someone wouldn't enter the military would be because they're a wussy pussy? Why is it turned into a strictly macho issue? Could it be because some have their own direction in life whereas some who join the military have none but knew they would be given one? :o

And how many military personnel have an education beyond a high school diploma? Here again, join the military and they will be provided an education of different sorts. :D

During WW2, they were referred to as "Hiding behind the Cow" in reference to having a 'Farm' job.

During Vietnam they were simply draft-dodgers... :D

Back on Topic:

Peaceful demonstrations in Paris, much like the Religion of Peace, are fiction. :D

A supermarket has been ransacked and a café trashed on the Boulevard de l'Hôpital, situated in between the Place d'Italie (where Paris demonstrations kicked off earlier today) and the Bastille is taking a hit. Go get 'em Anarchists! :o

Could it be that your entire inventory of silly, politically correct stereotypes will be used up some day?

The military has as many intelligent people in it as any other occupation and a great number of recruits join the military in order to get a University education and do so when their enlistment is finished.

For someone who thinks that they are so intelligent, you sure don't put much thought into any of your "thinking". What an ignorant wus! :o

In the meantime, the RIOTS are into their 6th day now, and becoming increasingly violent, again, just like the last riot, and the one before that.

Although, France did have one big riot once, that actually did some good. Way back a couple of centuries ago, the French rioted for 10 years and succeeded in replacing the absolute monarchy with a democratic republic, (way back in 1789-1799).

It appears they haven't progressed much since then......

Could it be because some have their own direction in life whereas some who join the military have none but knew they would be given one?

Sigh..., one needs to use really simple language and short sentences with some of our war-heros, Tippaporn.

A conditional 'could' and juxtapositioning two groups of people does inevitably lead to misunderstandings as their brains overheat and shortcircuit in a desperate attempt to comprehend what's being said.
