Popular Post Morakot
The picture shows a shrine dedicated to a guardian spirit. The colour red is traditionally a positive sign, a symbol for joy and happiness. Offering someone something to drink is also a symbol of kindness. PalMan
It's up to the particular spirit what they prefer - some do prefer khao lao or the green stuff. As to why most prefer the red one, dunno, why don't you ask them?
Popular Post rubberduck
Since when do ghosts drink it ? wildorchid
It's not a ghost, it is a lower angel, not normal to give red Fanta but it dose happen if you look closely at the photo you can see some small dancing dolls, the gifts are because people come and pray and ask for something, maybe find a husband, or get a government job, or travel to another country, the is seven coloured cloths is a gift also. PalMan
Apparently they feed off the flavor, aroma and color, not the substance itself. Red is the color of blood, so it helps give them life-strength, vitality. But some spirits do prefer other more specific drinks, just like different types of dolls/toys etc. Talk to the people that take care of a particular spirit house and they'll tell you the details, if they can see you're sincerely respectful and curious, not just trying to make fun of them.

There is a lot to make fun of, indeed! "Consumerist animism", is it? - If you think people consuming the blood and body of Christ every Sunday is just as worth of laughter, fair enough. I just find it interesting and certainly would never let the Thais know I don't respect their beliefs.
PalMan
It is offerings to the unborn child. If you are interested in the real story, goggle "kuman thong"- What picture are you talking about? Are you trying to say that every spirit house has something to do with that particular idol? The topic here is just the normal bog-standard spirit houses you see all over Thailand. The Kuman Thong phenomenon is much rarer and limited to particular subgroups.

Offering someone something to drink is also a symbol of kindness. People offer red drinks because they mean well towards this spirit. I've thought red is traditionally the color for wealth and prosperity ( think about the color scheme of the gold shops...). So in the Thai (Chinese) mindset this means: Offer red lemonade, get shitloads of GOLD!!!

yourauntbob
I asked this question of the missus a few months back and her answer is as follows. Because they believe that kids like red soda more than other flavors, and these are for the kid ghosts. Not saying this is correct, just the answer i got.
