In Samui i would go for the 6th not wanting to give Khun Nok any excuses. i have also lived in Udon, Pattaya and Phuket where both options would be ok, but with Nok i would go for the 6th.

Schools will be closed for the first and last ones.

The 10th is Constitution Day

Will the Phangan/Samui ferries run on the 5th? If not, I'll have to stay the night on Samui.

Ferries run every day - weather permitting

You are welcome to use our guest room if not AngThong. You have helped me many times! Just let me know

I presume you are on 1 year extension of stay and live on Samui.

90 day reporting can be made 15 days before reporting date and 7 days after.

Sorry Big C but I do not think that they captured bin Laden. I think that the phrase is 'wasted him'.

and tomorrow (May 1st - Labour Day/workers day) is probably a holiday too.

Anyway - it is red on my calendar.

Yes, May 13 is wisakha pucha day is one of the major Buddhist holiday, and public holiday, also you aren't supposed to sell alcohol and most "adult entertainment" venues will let the girls have day off.

This link will have all the public holidays listed and in () what is closed on those days.
http://event.sanook.com/

It was probably written when the Royal Ploughing Ceremony day hasn't been determined yet, but according to this link:
https://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/แรกนาขวัญ
For 2557 (2014) it's May 9th and listed as public holiday.

It appears May has the most public holidays where gov and banks are closed. (That is if we count songkran as 1 holiday)

So to sum it up:

Thursday May 1 Labour day (gov closed, banks open)
Monday May 5 Coronation day (gov closed, banks closed)
Friday May 9 Ploughing Ceremony day (gov closed, banks open)
Tuesday May 13 Wisakha Pucha day (gov closed, banks closed)

Rest of the year:
Tuesday 1 July 2014 Mid Year Bank Holiday (gov open, banks closed)
Friday 11 July 2014 Asaha Pucha day(gov closed, banks closed) (no alcohol and "adult entertainment")

Monday 11 August 2014 "Special holiday" announced by junta (gov closed, banks closed)
Tuesday 12 August 2014 Queen's Birthday (Mother's Day) (gov closed, banks closed)
Thurday 23 October 2014 Chulalongkorn Day (gov closed, banks closed)
Friday 5 December 2014 King's Birthday (Father's Day) (gov closed, banks closed)
Wednesday 10 December 2014 Constitution Day (gov closed, banks closed)
Wednesday December 2014 New Years Eve (gov closed, banks closed)

from Moles post ....

Friday May 9 Ploughing Ceremony day (gov closed, banks open).... ??? That's not marked on my calendar w00t.gif Where does the ploughing ceremony take place! ?blink.pngwink.png

I would say to MAGS75 to maybe try the 7th, rather than the 6th..... it's usually always a night mare at SI after a public holidaywink.png

The date is listed on this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Ploughing_Ceremony

The exact dates are decided by Brahmins when the times nears, that's why it's not marked on any printed calendars since obviously they're printed well in advance.

What and where it takes place, read in that link.

For those who don't really want to bother reading TFA, it's performed in Sanam Luang in Bangkok and I believe it's broadcasted live on TV.

I will be in Samui on the 13th. What would be a good thing to do on that day? We want to do the usual stuff, a tour to the islands and a hire car to visit the temples.

Would the Budhist holiday be a good day to go to the temples or would we be better off out on a boat?

I appreciate any advice, thanks.wink.png

For touristy things, nothing much will be different than any other day.... so do a tour around the island or go out in a boat.... up to you!

Some shops or offices might be closed, but probably not ones you would need! wink.png

Thanks Jimmy, what about the temples seeing as it's a religious holiday?

I think you'll just see local people praying a bit more at some of the Temples...

I have been to Temples, on some of these days... just might be a few more locals there.... It's not a big deal to go visit.... not same same as going to churches in western countries.... where they still have a service with all the "trimmings"... at a set time....

People here just go, and do their prayer in front of the Buddha... it's not a set service.... at least as far as I know or seen... The Big Buddha and Plae Laem (sp) near the Big Buddha Temples are usually the most visited.... personally I prefer the Plae Laem temple... it's not quite as commercialized... wink.png Other temples around the island don't create as large a draw, except perhaps the Mumified Monk... near Ban Thurian...wai2.gif

I am not sure about alcohol sales for this holiday... some holidays they do ban the sale of booze.... but it is usually not hard to find if you really need it! wink.png

Enjoy you stay.... don't over plan things... be spontaneous thumbsup.gif !
