Phuket Red Cross makes urgent call for O-negative blood
Phuket Gazette

PHUKET: -- The Phuket Regional Blood Center (PRBC), often called upon to save the lives of Thais and foreigners, has no reserves of O-negative type blood.

“We try to maintain a daily minimum stock of 200 units of A, B and O blood types, and 20 units of Rhesus-negative blood,” said PRBC Acting Chief Pornthip Rattajak.

“We need all types of blood, but right now have a special need for O-negative as we have patients waiting for surgery who need O-negative blood,” she added.

The Phuket Chapter of the Red Cross Society has announced its schedule of mobile donation clinics for the month of June.

To help replenish dwindling stocks, the mobile blood donation clinics will be at the following places and times.

June 11: Phuket International Hospital, 1pm-4pm

June 13: Centara Grand Beach Hotel, (Karon Beach), 1pm-4pm

June 18: Duangjit Resort (Patong), 10am-3pm

June 19: Central Festival Phuket, noon-6pm

June 21: Bangkok Hospital Phuket, King Karlgustaf Room 3rd Floor, 1pm-5pm

June 25: Nap Patong Hotel, 1pm-4pm

June 26: Prince of Songkla University (Phuket Campus), 10am-3pm

June 28: Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, 10am-3pm

The blood center accepts donations at their headquarters on Rattanakosin 200 Year Road, next to Phuket Provincial Employment Office in Saphan Hin, at the following days and times:

- Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays: from 8:30am-4:30pm

- Tuesdays and Thursdays: from 8:30am-8pm

I always watch for this because my household is O neg, I am O pos.

But everytime we have tried to give we have been turned away by the Samui hospitals,

because there is no way to get the blood where it's needed, or they don't know what to do.

Sad, but that's the facts jack.

Surely there must be plenty of male and female inmates who would be more than happy to assist in this matter in order to amend some of their crimes against society? Blood given for the blood taken (literally and figuratively) so to speak?

And how about leadership by example? What about MP's, police and any other vampires who are living off the expense of the ones who need their blood back (literally and figuratively)?

Just curious why this call always goes out into the wind, and there never seems to be an answer except from decent people.

The thing that you need to understand is this; the percentage of the Thai population with O Negative Blood is less than 1%. So, that precludes any other person donating blood for the O Negative blood type. They (me included) can only receive O Negative. However, O Negative blood can be received by any other blood type. It is the only universal donor.

You idea is good, but impossible here in Thailand for the RH Negatives. But, it is good for all other blood types.

It would have been helpful if PRBC had specified those who need not offer to help. I volunteered about 10 years ago and was told that I was too old. I think the age limit is 55 years. Having suffered some diseases also disqualifies. If they had issued more fulsome information it may save them time and effort.

Isn't it possible to hire refrigerated vans in Thailand? If so, could not Sriracha and BKK Red Cross hospitals take blood from donors and send it south?
