Putao In December?

Featured Replies

What is it like? Worth a visit? What can be done there apart from treking?

Halfaboy - how was Myitkyina? Myitkyina and Putao have been on my to-do list for a while, but yet to make it up there.

Yes - will be very cold in December up there.

I had a great time in Myitkyina. It’s still as it was 60 years ago (sorry for the people living there). I visited the market area (covered market, riverside market and street market), the railway station with the transhipment ad shunting area, a Hindu temple and enjoyed the general scenery. There was also a kind of night market. All in a very relaxed atmosphere.

Also paid a visit to Myit Sone. This is the confluence of the Maikha and the Malika streams and the start of the 2.500 km long Ayeyarwaddy (or Irrawaddy-) river. The trip of some 50 km took around 2 hours and was for me the most interesting part.

Be careful when booking this trip. Travel agents are asking 80US$ for the trip. There are private cars (just ask around) for less. Avoid doing business with the travel agent next to the Two Dragon hotel. I had a nasty experience with them.

Stayed in the new Light hotel and booked a suite for 30US$ per night. Really worth the money.

Their airport facilities are unique ! Just enjoy....

All in all it was a great experience.

Great post and info - thanks for sharing.

Any photos?

Myit Sone trip sounds like a definite 'to-do' for anyone heading up there.

I made many pictures. Here's a small 'ad random' selection.

Picture number 8 is a view on Myit Sone. There are two streams coming from the left (one from China and the other from India) and at the place they come together the Ayeyarwaddy river starts.

Just noticed that the size of the pictures is rather small. No idea how to correct. Sorry.

Hope you enjoy !
