Political Party Steals Land

Interesting story about how the Democratic Party opened up a local party office on someone's land. As is typical, they're trying to wriggle themselves out of having any responsibility despite having their banner (see photo) displayed.

It clearly demonstrates that very little has actually changed here. Abuses by those in power when it comes to stealing land were common in the past, indeed much of the land that Companies are looking to rent/lease right now are in dispute and that includes land at Hlaing Tharyar. Not that the people at the Myanmar Investment Commission are telling foreign Companies that...!

I must be psychic!

I see this story has just been posted in the news section.

In particular the section that reads:-

Minister Set Aung stressed that these issues would now be resolved fairly. “Please don’t compare [the land rights issues] at Thilawa with industrial zones that were constructed in the past. The Thiliwa SEZ is special and developed in accordance with international standards,” he said, adding that work had also begun on the project’s environmental impact assessment.

Bolded emphasis is mine.

First time I have ever seen a member of the government acknowledge that. No doubt they'll be advising foreign investors that every industrial zone created thus far has land issues....rolleyes.gif
