Last night was an exciting game, as the records broken show:

  • Highest T20 individual international score: Aaron Finch 156 (Only Chris Gayle's 175 in the IPL is better.)
  • Highest aggregate score: 457 - Eng v Aus 29/8/13
  • Most team sixes in innings: Australia - 18

England gave it a go, but Finch's 156 off 63 meant the total was just too much for them.

From the BBC

"Sometimes you have to hold your hands up," England captain Stuart Broad told BBC Sport. "It was a magnificent knock by Finch and he won the game for Australia.

"It was incredible striking and to hit 14 sixes in an innings is pretty special. It was amazing to watch but unpleasant to bowl at.

"The crowd will go home happy having seen 460 runs off 40 overs, but there are 11 disappointed Englishmen, that's for sure."

On any other night, Root and England's effort may well have kept them in touch but Finch's extraordinary innings left them with too tough a target to chase.

While I have taken note of the Australian woman's cricket team scores at various times, I would never go out of my way to watch them play in the outdoor game. I don't like the fact they are playing for the "ashes" in England. They should organize their own trophy with their own traditions.

Maybe it's different in Oz, but in the UK it seems that any series in any sport between the two countries is dubbed "The Ashes."

Both codes of rugby, for example.

But I believe there is only one real Ashes.

Given the incident regarding the England players, grass is more than appropriate. However, Shane Watson reported Warner over the incident in Walkabout, if that makes you feel better.

As for Malcolm Conn , he's not exactly the best cricket reporter, sort of a Red Top journalist with little knowledge of the game.

Shane Watson reported him? I think you have it wrong there. Watson pressured then Coach, Mickey Mouse, and management to give Warner the same punishment he and others got for 'homework-gate' in India. More about consistency of team standards.

It isn't a matter of 'grassing' here. Warner shouldn't be punching anyone, let alone an opposition player.

Finch blasts record T20 knock in win

Aaron Finch blasted the highest individual score in a Twenty20 international to power Australia to a drought-breaking 39-run win over England in Southampton on Thursday.

Opener Finch smashed a remarkable 156 off 63 balls as Australia scored 6-248 in the first innings, the second-highest international T20 team score.

It was Australia's first win in any international cricket format in more than 200 days as they landed an overdue blow against England after a 3-0 Ashes series loss.

Former Pakistani refugee Fawad Ahmed (0-43) made his much-awaited debut but the occasion was overshadowed by Finch's remarkable display of power hitting.

The 26-year-old Victorian had a packed Rose Bowl in awe with an innings that featured a record 14 sixes and 11 fours.

Never happened back in the glorious 70s or 80s then?

It might have but how is that relevant? Past behaviours justify future behaviors?

England level it after a fine knock (or should that be smash) of 94 from Alex Hales, winning by 27 runs. No post match urination for the convicts to run to the teacher about.

Chicog;

Speaking as an Englishman I am asking you to please; give it a rest!

Stupid incident, all over, no one is interested anymore except you.

God, the way you wont let this rest you're beginning to sound like the Scottish idiot!

Muslim spinner given leave to keep a sponsor off his back

Fawad Ahmed will raise a hard-earned thirst in the one-day cricket series against England this week, but he will not promote the product his teammates will as a way to quench it.

Ahmed, one of two Australian Muslims to play on the ''VB Tour of England'', was picked for the five-game limited overs series after he made his debut in the Twenty20 series last week.

The spin bowler - who fled Pakistan in 2009, sought asylum in Australia in 2010 and gained citizenship in July - ''expressed discomfort'' about wearing the logo of one of Cricket Australia's two major sponsors because, on religious grounds, he does not associate with alcohol.

I believe that there are some Muslim players in English county cricket who do the same.

Good for them for sticking to their principles, I say.

Edit:

Not just county cricket, but the IPL as well; and it seems Hashim Amla covers an alcohol related logo on his South Africa shirt.

IPL 2013 controversy: Parvez Rasool 'hides' liquor brand logo on his Pune Warriors' jersey

What's common between South African batting star Hashim Amla and rookie Jammu and Kashmir and Pune Warriors' off-spinner Parvez Rasool? Apart from being cricketers, both have refused to endorse liquor brands on their team clothing because of religious sentiments.

That is an impressive opening partnership for Australia...246.

Will we be seeing FInch in the Test side?

When Warner started as a specialist player for the T20 version of the game it was said he wouldn't make a decent ODI player...and in turn he wouldn't make a test player

Probably should've decided to go straight down to the pub. 363 is quite a big target...

.... 0 for 1 after two overs is not the best of starts

Better than 2 for 2 after 5, perhaps, SC?

England aren't doing much better; 19 for 1 after 7.

Well, we've managed to keep the wicket rate down over the last couple of overs

World record 5th wicket stand in an ODI of 226 from Bopara and Morgan see England home with 7 overs to spare after a shaky start brought about by an excellent opening bowling spell from Murtagh of 3 for 33.

But once he'd bowled his 10, it was England, or rather Morgan and Bopara, all the way.

Meanwhile in Edinburgh; Scotland all out for 162 in 43.5; Australia win by 200 runs.

Looking forward to Friday.

Nice sunny day at Old Trafford; Australia 49 for 1 after 10.

Rain forecast for late afternoon, though. Here's hoping Messrs Duckworth and Lewis wont have a role to play!
