BANGKOK: -- Today, Lumpini police will request that the criminal court issue an arrest warrant for a 45-year-old American man who is accused of assaulting a 41-year-old maid at a luxury hotel in Sukhumvit.

As a result of the attack, the maid is suffering a cervical fracture that caused her to become paralyzed and to permanently lose her ability to breathe.

John Douglas Davis, a Tennessee local and a first-time visitor to Thailand, reportedly flung the maid, whose name is withdrawn, into the hotel bed on May 14. He checked out from the hotel and flew back to the US the next morning.

Authorities said that Davis’s intoxicated state might lead to the violence. According to Manager Online, Davis was drinking with two female friends in his room before the incident. [more...]

If this dude injured this woman to the point where she was not breathing, where were the cops? Watching the muay Thai?

Great headline guys whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty.

Please remember where you are, or at least the source of the news.

SUSPECTED, is, I assume, the missing word?

the maid may have had a previous injury from a vehicle accident but unless this is investigated properly we will never know .

The headline is 100% accurate. It is a warrant for his arrest because there is sufficient evidence, not a statement that he is quilty. English is a tricky langauge.

That it is.

Its a rather blanket statement though.

Hope they get him, the USA isnt that good at extraditing their citizens but expects it of other countries.

Why is the identity of this major hotel still being withheld from the public? They tried their hardest to prevent the police from being involved because it might damage their reputation and therefore acted in a total irresponsible manner. The police might already have this man in custody if the hotel had acted properly and it may have made a difference in the condition of the victim and I hope she has sufficient grounds for a big lawsuit against the hotel. Money and power seems to automatically acquire anonymity in Thailand. A small hotel would have been named and shamed at the pleasure of the reporters.

Strange, when the victim is Thai and the alleged perpetrator is American, the "hang them high brigade" stay silent!sad.png

Only the language-police is out in full force!!rolleyes.gif

You are right probably because its a Thai female and so many guys here are cheated by them (because they think with their wrong head) that they see this as some kind of revenge.

I really hope they get this guy if he is guilty, can you imagine having to spend your life without being able to breathe yourself.

Disgusting, hopefully this will be investigated properly and a suitable punishment dished out to the perpetrator.

Poor reporting today as there is no address of the guilty man, the reason he came to Thailand and who he was having sex with, where he stayed and so many more personal details that are important to this news report for this convict.

Oh no, my bad. Most of that is included and implied on the site. Thank goodness for that. Now everyone in his entire life, for the rest of his life, will know and be able to search of the crime he has definitely committed here.

This article is in another paper and says nothing about her being a maid.

Only that he took her and two other friends into his hotel room in the early hours of 14th May. Her friends left the hotel and about 30 minutes later she was found. Didn't say if he was in the room or left with the friends.

The hotel is in the sukhumvit area. FYI

Go figure

"Permanently losing the ability to breathe" means instant death. There is no way someone can survive for more than a few minutes without being able to breathe. How can an article with such horrible English even be published? I had to re-read the article twice to kind of make the assumption the writer was trying to say that the maid has lost the ability to "breathe unaided".

I also agree that it is pretty weird that the name of this hotel was not mentioned. Was it the Sheraton? The Grand Millenium perhaps? It is horrible that this lady has been paralyzed by this incident and will never work again - her life has been ruined. This man, if he is definitely guilty of this crime needs to be brought to justice and punished. Where he comes from or looks like doesn't matter, he committed a despicable act, that's why he needs to be punished.

Agree with both you guys. Beating up on a defenseless woman who's just doing her job? This coward needs to be dragged back and punished to the full extent of the law.

Whatever. They would have done some investigating before they asked the courts for an arrest warrant. It's obvious the guy screwed up and then fled. Bad reporting or not this is NOT a good thing and now the poor lady has to suffer for the rest of her life. It don't matter if she stole from him, swore at him or anything, violence against woman IS WRONG !!!!!!!!

The headline didn't say he was guilty. The report said that he was only accused of assaulting the maid.

I don't think police are posted in the rooms of hotel guests waiting for them to assault the staff. Do you expect them to materialise out of thin air every time an incident occurs?

What? When did she have a vehicle accident and what would be the likelihood of her being able to work after a paralysing accident?

Absolutely.

If he did assault her, and that kind of injury is not likely to have been self-inflicted, he's a total scumbag. Hang him high if he's guilty.

I don't believe this, Yanks are such a kind and considerate nation, not a crooked bone in their bodies, totally unacceptable.

Are you sure the headline is "100% accurate"

Although I am not an English teacher, nor was an English major I can say that the headline is indeed in misleading.

"Arrest warrant to be issued for American man who attacked, paralyzed maid"

Regardless of whether or not an arrest warrant from the Thai police does NOT in any way provide that he did indeed attack and paralyze the maid.

If they said "Arrest warrant to be issued for an American that is presumed to have attacked and paralyzed maid", that would have been correct.

A headline is only a headline. The "accused" part was clearly stated in the report.

something doesnt make sense here,if he took 2 females to his room plus the maid 2 of the 3 must have had their id checked or held at reception, the maid was she on duty, now this is what i think is strange how did a person check out of a top hotel without the room being checked, then there is the time from checking out, getting to the airport, then was that the day he was due to fly, then the discovery of the maid 30mins later,if this is true why wasnt he arrested at the airport,me thinks he had paid for a short time at this hotel and they are trying to cover this up,that is why they have not named it.

Whatever. They would have done some investigating before they asked the courts for an arrest warrant. It's obvious the guy screwed up and then fled. Why do you suggest she may have stolen something from him? Do you have information the media doesn't? Disgusting.

There are so many questions, e.g. motive.

What was the guy trying to do to the 41-year old lady? Sexual activity? ...because he couldn't get it with the two girls prior (or they cost too much? ...or he found that they were not actually female?)?

How could a cervix fracture when the body lands on a bed (and not the floor)?

How does a cervical fracture impair natural automatic breathing, as isn't it the brain, and not the cervix, that manages automatic breathing?

Did he check out the next morning, or immediately after the incident? In any case, there would have been plenty of opportunity for the maid to loudly seek assistance and attention from others who work there. So what exactly happened afterward? Was there commotion when he tried to leave to get a taxi?
