I just went to the website and they listed $197 as the charge to join?? I would have liked to see a sample.

There are a lot free on iTunes ( over 100), enough to decide if you want to pay for the rest.
If you have an iPhone or iPad then they are really easy to access via the built in podcasts app.

Hi

First time poster here. Still living in the UK but will be popping over a couple of times this year before making the big move in 2018. I am a subscriber to Thai Podcast, you can pay in 4 instalments which is what I have done. I also subscribed to a site called Thai Style, they provide materials and a local teacher whom you pay directly £12 an hour. Sounds great but the material seemed pretty dated and the teacher was basically a Thai girl that worked four jobs here, she wasn't a proper teacher at all in the true sense, she had never met the company or been assessed or any of the things you might expect in a process of attaining a teaching job. She told me to learn from the videos on Thai Podcast, could you believe it. In fairness, I asked for, and got a refund on the materials I had purchased. The other one that seems quite popular is ThaiPod 101.com, their marketing is very aggressive and off putting once you have subscribed to the free material, Im still deleting their daily spam now. So I will stick with Thai Podcast and once I have a better grasp of the alphabet I will get a Skype teacher online direct from Thailand. There seems to be some really well qualified people doing this for about £12 hr.

As for apps Im using Nemo, Learn Thai from a white guy (LTFAWG) and Thai Script. I also browse other you tube videos and have downloaded Thai2English on my PC, thats very comprehensive and handy. Hope some of this helps.

I signed up for LTP back in May by paying for the course over 4 monthly installments. I paid the first two installments and everything was going fine. A few days a ago when I logged in the system is showing my subscription as expired and shows no record of my payments. As a result I cannot access any of the lessons.

I wrote an email to them and sent them a note through the message system on their website informing them of this error but as of yet I have not received any response from LTP. I have wrote to them every day now for 3 days and still no reply or resolution to the problem.  I am very disappointed with this lack of customer support as I was enjoying the course.

I don't know if any of you have experienced similar problems or have a contact number for them? Their silence is very frustrating as their website states they will reply to queries within 24 hours.

An update,

I heard back from LTP and I am back online with full access. It was just a minor Technical hitch so my overall impression is that this is a very good course.

Nothing opens up on this website?

Unfortunately yes.

No idea what happened over the years (the quoted post is from 2006).

Links to the internet are always prone to change/shutdown etc.

It's well possible that there are more outdated links.

If you have an Australian, Canadian, or US library card, check to see if your library offers Mango Language.  It is great for learning pronunciation, better than Pimsleur in my opinion. You can also purchase acess on their website.   Your library may have Pronunciator instead which is ok.

I always thought you needed to have native speakers around you to listen and learn.....

but that is "proper" language and now there is so much slang , shortcuts and OMGs   that its hard to learn by listening .....

the small amount of German I know goes away quickly once I am out of Europe ,  no reason to remember it until my next visit :)

I give credit to anyone who can pick up an new language in a year or 2

I'm not sure if it's OK to post my own app here or not, but I wrote a 50,000+ word Thai language textbook that I've released as an app for phones and tablets called Pocket Thai. App store link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocket-thai/id1274490875?mt=8

Most Thai learning apps are by developers that use the same template for every language and all that they teach you is common vocab but no real explanations of grammar or the finer points of the language.  I wrote my app for people that are more serious about learning Thai and people that live in Thailand or plan to live their for at least a few years.

There are certainly lots of good free resources out there, but I consider this a similar level to Benjawan Becker's book but in a more convenient form than book + CD combo and with English explanations of what's going on.

I wish I'd had this years ago, it's a great app for learning Thai properly from the ground up. The first 5 chapters are free, so I'd recommend giving it a go and see what you think.

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can help me or point me in the right direction? I married a Thai woman and we are having problems communicating. I am in the US and she is still in Thailand. I am looking for a sofeware program that will work both ways with e-mail. English<>thai.

Thanks so much,

Randy

Randy,  What the hell did I just read?

I've got a thai wife too,  and buddy,  there are some times that you are better off not being able to speak the language.

Chok dee man.

I do like the Thai2English website, I use it for translating Thai lyrics, and learning Thai songs basically ~ but sadly it doesn’t offer a mobile version... and obviously it requires Internet connection, had few times wanting to use it on my flights, ending with impossibility  though. Now I’m using a Language learning app called “Ling App”, found it accidentally, it has quite a lot of languages. It’s really useful for me, it has words, phrases, dialogues and so on... also have speaking, writing game, full of fun, I was worrying that I cannot really master this gentle language, but now I’ve been able to read some simple words, phrases, and can have some short conversations with Thai people. Hope we all can conquer this language barrier!~~   Oh, I’ll just put the link here, https://ling-app.com/. They have both mobile version and website out there.

For me,  the Thai-language site is invaluable and I have learned from advanced beginner when I lived here as a 5 year old kid in the 1960s to high intermediate level today. I use this site to set me straight on when to use words in proper context as well as alternate uses of words. The dictionary is top notch, however, the grammatical lessons are really where you want to be to learn proper Thai.

My heart rises when a local tells me my pronunciation is spot on. I respond, “ I can speak clearly. But I am not yet fluent.”พูดชัดแต่ไม่คล่องครับ” For some reason they always laugh at this.

Anyway, for me, Thai language is like a game that I will continue to play, but will never win! The fun is before the final bell.

They have a Android version in Playstore. Looks a quality app. Can you buy all the chapters in one go or do you have to buy the individual chapters. How much are they?

It's £10 for the whole thing, so it's a cheap investment. Best app I've used for learning Thai ????

There are two Android apps, Pocket Thai Speaking and Pocket Thai Master, both are free.

If I remember correctly, the first 5 or 10 chapters are free. After that, you can pay £10/$10 to unlock the rest of the programme. But he may have made it completely free now ????

It's well worth it either way.

Both apps are completely free.

WHAT’S NEW

Pocket Thai Speaking is now completely free to use! Thank you to the thousands of users who purchased Pocket Thai and good luck on your Thai language learning journey!
