About 5,000 protestors in the southern Thai province of Nakorn Sri Thammarat have spoken out in opposition to a proposed camp for Rohingya Muslim refugees from neighboring Burma, according to Xinhua news agency. The residents of Cha-uad District have reportedly signed a petition in which they oppose the planned temporary camp on concerns that the refugees, who arrived by boat from Burma’s Arakan State, will jeopardize the health and safety of the local population. Thailand’s deputy interior minister is scheduled to meet with Cha-uad residents on Friday in an attempt to resolve the issue.
