(Old) 3BB premier package

I've had an old 3BB premier package for a number of years now. The speeds are pretty stable and says what is does on the tin, 3 down and 1 up. The reason for the premier package was better international access.

My question now would be is would I get better value for money swapping to say the 13mb package which is roughly the same price? If I did change there would be no going back if I didn't like it as the premier is now discontinued. Basically its for home usage, download some torrents, a little streaming video and just general surfing and Skype.

Also as another pointer I'm living in the Naklua area near Pattaya, does anyone have any experience of the difference with 3BB and True?

Just spoke to who seemed a decent guy at 3BB, his advice was don't swap, the old premier package is still more stable internationally than the other packages, his advice was wait until new fiber package is available in my area,

if it is like 3BB in Korat you have to pay 12 months in advance =total of 16,000 baht.I am getting 35 down/3up.

Stay away from the normal packages, absolute rubbish for international peering.

Unless you go for a commercial/premium fiber-connection, you're not gonna see much improvement when it comes to international speeds and peering. There's another thread on this forum with a guy from Bangkok who bought 100/100 Mbit/s fiber-connection for 24 000 baht/mo (note that this was the normal package, and not commercial/premium which is 48 000 baht/mo.)

His speeds internationally (from the US) were around 2/2 Mbit/s which is absolutely atrocious for that cost.

change your package ASAP for 13/1 and you'll see a huge improvement at a fraction of your actual monthly bill.

I switched from Premier 5/1M package to two 16/1M packages. Everything I was able to do before I am able to do now. Skype works most of the time - sometimes there are issues with sound but that was the same with the old package (probably related to jitter). For torrents, the 16/1M packages work very well (downloaded/uploaded a total of around 9TB+ in the last 4.5 months) [my ISP in Canada would have freaked if I did that there]. A single connection is limited in speed, but when there are many seeders (thus many connections) to download a file it can go very fast. The only issues I have had is a week ago (for a week) my international speed was limited to less than 15% of ADSL line speed.... but after 6 days I complained by email and 24 hours later it was back to normal. The network management will kick in during the daytime to restrict international speeds to 50% or even 33% of line speed - but late at night it returns to full speed.

While i was on holiday my son changed ,it was pretty useless before ,it is pretty useless now , i keep getting that they are unable to connect to the internet ,they are connected , if they were in the west they would have been bankrupt years ago.

If they were in the west, like lets say Bell or Rogers in Canada they would cap your total bandwidth at some ridiculously low amount of bandwidth:

Express package (normal): $51.99 - capped at 80GB per month

Extreme package $64.99 - capped at 120GB per month

Speed does not matter much if you can wipe out your cap in a matter of minutes

And yes they would still be in business

Not when I lived there in 2002 - at that time internet sucked there - you were about 10 years behind the US at that point (I moved from the US to UK). Now Thailand is behind the UK. It was better in Canada in 2002 but the government has let the duopoly strangle good competition and those packages are the result.

I would prefer more up-speed (20M), down speed I have as much as I need for now..... I maxed out the first month (on my load balanced dual line installation) - downloading close to 4TB. Internet here has vastly improved in the last 3 years, but they do have a deficit in international bandwidth - but then it is much further away from America than the UK is.

I recall asking the 3BB staff in Udon about changing from my grandfathered, more expensive but adequate current service to the newer/faster/cheaper services. It wasn't an option short of canceling and disconnecting and then applying for the new service. I always wondered if their concerns about getting poorer service on the newer/faster/cheaper were based on technical realities or the fact that they would be getting less money each month from a long-time customer.

In Scandinavia you would get 100/100 Mbit for $50/month, no bandwidth caps and no limited peering which would force you to get a "premium" service.

Now you can even get 1000/1000 Mbit (no, that is the correct amount of zeroes) for $30/mo in Vermont (the state), without bandwidth caps. According to customers they are getting around 935-950 Mbit/s up and down at all times.

Can't stream anything after 18:00 with my 3BB 9/0.5 Mbit standard. Whilst my dad's friend who has a grandfathered 9/1 Mbit premium has no problem streaming anything, regardless of what time it is.

So either the premium has something extra, or 3BB is complete rubbish north of Bangkok.

It varies from area to area, depending also on the usage patterns of the people in your area.
