They drag their low-life habits to my country for no good reason(s) and it makes me  sick to my stomach.  

it disgusts me to see people DEMANDING here whenin their own countries there are NO EXTENSIONS or ways around. stop complain8ng or find another country

I have always presented myself in appropriate dress when dealing with a local or government agencies, at home, in the US or in Thailand and I never would say I dress-up for that occasion.

My Thai step daughter recently fulfilled her University degree requirements at the Bangkok Thai immigration office, in a four month non paid on the job training, she told her mother that she was very surprised at ex-pats coming in for visa renewal. Without bringing the required proper paper work with them. That they expected her to complete their visa application forms for them and would get very upset when they were required to go back home and return with the required paper work.

As she knows that I always have my form completed and required paperwork attached.

Again to me it is just a common courtesy to put on long pants ans a shirt which I consider as appropriate dress for myself when I required service at these offices..

Anyone who turns up in shorts or simmets, but whos paperwork is in order, should to told to go back home and report again the next day looking more respectful I would not go to immigration for 90 reporting or extension dressed the way I was when I was a school teacher, a casual top, trousers

Or of course visit immigration on a Friday when its casual day (certainly in Maptuphut) and all of the immigration officials are in track suits, golf shirts and some even have shorts on themselves.......when in Rome and all....

His (presumably) wife was with him so he could have given the baby to her. I am not much for dressing up and such but Thais seem to like it for these kind of occasions and you are trying to get a service so better get on their good side.

Ever tried taking a baby to a Thai government office and having to wait all day?

(for all you know he was alone, and getting an extension for looking after baby, so baby had to be there).

As for dress, you do understand babies constantly leak bodily fluids from both ends, wear a suit, I think not.

They change the rules all the time for paperwork.

I have been to immigration about a week before extending a visa to get a list of everything required, the next week I was told documents not on the list were needed.

My company takes care of my 90 day reports.

Once a year I accompany our specialist to extend my visa.

The people sitting around me in the waiting area and I all seem to have the right idea.

There are only two reasons to wear a suit here: you're a Japanese businessman or you have an appointment with a Cabinet Minister.

Nobody here wears a suit, ok?

I show up properly groomed, wearing dress pants, polished shoes, a fresh, custom-tailored dress shirt and a decent necktie to Immigration.

I've been doing this for ten years.

On occasion, my documents have been incomplete.

I got through anyway.

I have never had to wait for more than half an hour.

If some applicants want to burn up bureaucratic good will by rocking up in cargo pants and a Same Same singlet they're welcome to do so.

In fact they have my blessing because they're just gonna make me look better.

You can't fix "stoopid".

Your company "specialist" cant much good then...if there has been occasions when your paperwork was incomplete...

been doing WP extensions for 12 years and have always turned up in jeans/running shoes and a golf shirt and never had a problem, and when I do do my 90 day report myself...shorts, golf shirt, and running shoes and again never had a problem....think you boys are reading too much into this appropriate attire thing..

Yes, but I wonder why he asked me if I had a work permit, it sounds a bit sinister to me. I was going to take a job at a different school last year, and was granted my fourth work permit, the third at that office. Ths schools Head of the English Dept told me to give the lady at the Labour Dept 3000 Baht for my work permit, I said no, the school should pay for it, so that was that. I have not taught since.

showing up in most any government office in a DIRTY shirt is generally inexcusable/dumb/stupid....you may not have "nice" clothes but SURELY you can at least keep the clothes you wear for "official business" CLEAN.....

When I was an English teacher, it was "your", not "you're".

Also "your grammar and spelling ARE not very good.

Yes, you are right, it is "your", I always wrote that until aThai English teacher told me it was "your'e", but "are" is wrong, it should be "is".

Any office that sees a lot of traffic, hundreds per day especially in resort areas will be very used to the disrespectful way we dress, so as long as you look neat and prosperous, say the way you'd dress to visit a golf or tennis club's dining area, you'll have no problem with a routine visit where everything's in order. Saying dress slacks or long-sleeve shirt is necessary is silly unless you're in a more upcountry type place and/or have a problem where you may want them to look upon you favorably, so many things at their discretion.

Actually in most of our countries, government officials don't demand much respect as they do here, the farang attitude is that they are public SERVANTS, they are working for the taxpayer, we are paying their salary, usually too high a salary for not much work and they have to strictly follow the rules not "up to them" like it is here, if a bureaucrat were to be arbitrary about their job they would be fired pretty quickly, scandal in the local paper etc.

So people can and do show up at government offices in their dirty work clothes and it isn't a problem, only in Asian countries have I ever heard of people being advised to dress nicely to visit a government office because the officials might be offended if you don't.

The same who find the sabai sabai mai pen rai attitude dont cut it in the West, the same luk kreung who rock up here and embrace all things Thai after finding out a degree requires more than a brown enevelope changing hands, the same who find out its the best man for the job, not a job based on where daddy can place you.
