if windows 8.1 preview not working try this

Featured Replies

Could not get windows 8.1 to install and found this on a microsoft site. Worked like a charm so I thought I would share it. Cheers.

Found a solution.

Navigate over to:
Control Panel\Clock, Language and Region\Language

(Can just search for "language" in settings / Win+w)

and add new language which is English (United States). Go into the options of this new language and download and install language pack. A system restart is prompted, BUT WAIT. Not just yet.

Go into the registry editor (run regedit, exe) and navigate to HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language and change the "InstallLanguage" string at the very bottom of the right pane to the value 0409 which is EN-US.

(You can remember what it was originally if you want to change it back after installation)

Now reboot.

After reboot, just run the update file from preview.windows.com and voila...

*Kudos to duvl for the fix*

I knew when I posted this I would get stupid replies from the people that either too tight or too stupid to move to windows 8. I posted this for the intelligent people who use this forum to better their knowledge.

Installed Windows 8, tested it for a few days, was not impressed and switched back to Windows 7. Unless you are using a touchscreen I don't really see the advantage to windows 8.

My biggest annoyance with windows 8 is the missing start menu...you have to actually install a 3rd party bulkware program just to get a start menu... does 8.1 have a start menu yet?

I have a Programs "button" in my Taskbar. It was easy to make and works similar to the START. However, reports are that START is back in 8.1. I have had this since starting with the pre-release versions. This is a standard function of Windows to make this. It is simply a Toolbar set in the Taskbar. It was quite easy to find the instructions on how to do this on Microsoft forums.

I suspect many people will complain about 8.1 because of the difference between pre-release and final versions.

Win 8 is buggy too. Seems to be a problem with external usb drives when using commercial backup programs. Don't much care for the new GUI (graphical user interface) either. Main reason for that is Microsoft help with the new interface is almost non-existent and too basic when you do find some.

Moral of the story: Should one trust a self-proclaimed intelligent person who is not intelligent enough to recognize a joke? Just because you like Win 8 does not make those that disagree with you stupid but it does make your name calling....Rude!giggle.gif

Not going to bother with the Preview, as you have to reinstall programs when the final release is around.

It's not exactly a leap in technology, either.

Might as well wait for the release version.

Is there anything that windows 8 does better than previous versions like xp? If so I have yet to find it....maybe it's all the apps? NONE of which I care to use.
