You can buy a small family sedan for the sort of money you are talking about spending. You buy get a used Hyundai for around $1500 here. It won't be brand new of course, but it will do the job.

And while you are in the saving mode, buy a shack or even better a tent, and stay in there for 3 months, instead of wasting money on a house rental! You can donate the tent to your maid when you leave ;-)
