webfact Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 More rain forecast as Phuket housing estate goes underwaterPhuket GazettePHUKET: -- More rain is forecast for the coming days as Phuket suffers heavy deluges causing minor flooding at locations across the island.More than 68mm of rainfall was recorded at Phuket International Airport yesterday and 56mm fell on Phuket Town, with both locales recording more than 25mm within a three-hour period.A three-hour rainstorm on Tuesday brought flooding again to the Thalang Public Housing Estate on Thepkrasattri Road, causing residents to call for government help.“Every time it rains hard, it floods,” said resident Wasumon Ploydam. On Tuesday night the water was up to 50cm deep. Guards stopped residents from driving down some of the interior roads, where whole parking areas were underwater and could not be used.“When it floods, I can’t park near my building,” said Montonn Songnuan, another resident. “I have to carry my uniform to my car and then change in my car,” he said.“I heard that the stream that flows through the estate is not deep enough. When it rains, water flows down the hills behind the estate and into the stream, causing it to overflow,” he said.“We’ve complained about this problem to the people in charge but nothing has happened. We need help,” said one resident who declined to be named.“The problem is getting worse,” she added.Source; http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket_news/2013/More-rain-forecast-as-Phuket-housing-estate-goes-under-water-21529.html-- Phuket Gazette 2013-07-04
draftvader Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 "Estate managers take money and do nothing" could easily be the headline that causes a nation to mutter "I know how you feel" into their Somtam. 2
Suffinator Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 You might assume this is something new but it happens across Phuket every time there's heavy downpour. With little proper drainage what can you expect? Piss poor construction fueled by greed = people under water. 1
newermonkey Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 With a bit of luck Phuket will become the next Atlantis. 2
Always18 Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 "the stream that flows through the estate is not deep enough......" = "the estate was built on a flood plain".................no surprise there then!
winstonc Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 they moan to eachother,,and thats as far as goes over here,,,,,sorry but get on with it,if your to lazy to collectivly do something,,,,its true,,,,
NamKangMan Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 "We've complained about the problem to the people in charge, but nothing has happened." - seems to be a lot of that happening on Phuket, from farang and Thai's. :)
shadh Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 That used to be all beautiful rice fields, not ideal for housing developments...
NamKangMan Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 That used to be all beautiful rice fields, not ideal for housing developments... Yes, a hotel development would have been better. :)

Traveling Sailor Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 While I could be very wrong, it sounds to me like another shining example of superior engineering. Here in the Thung Song area the power company seems unable to build electrical plant that works when it rains. Roads are not built to withstand rain. Houses are built on sand that washes away when it rains. Even though Rainy Season has been happening around here for hundreds of years, people still don't seem to be able to build with rain in mind. Why do you suppose that is??
Payboy Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 “The problem is getting worse,” she added. SNAFU then.
Mrjlh Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 What's going to keep the new "underpass" from flooding? Or is it on higher ground to start with?
JetsetBkk Posted July 4, 2013 Posted July 4, 2013 What's going to keep the new "underpass" from flooding? Or is it on higher ground to start with? It's on a slope.

Why do you suppose that is?? Exactly, an entire nation that doesn't understand water, know how to deal with it nor learn from past mistakes and they continue to do everything just like they have always done them.
