In line with two threads on miscommunication with Thais, my favourite story concerns an English friend who lived in Singapore and had a long standing Thai girlfriend in Jomtien.

During one of his regular calls to her she said that he needed a new mistress.

"Why, darling ? I am very happy."

"No, she old now and I get new one for you"

"Why do say that, darling"

"She not white"

"But I don't want a white one"

"She dirty and not clean anymore"

"I don't think that. I am very happy"

"No. Not nice for sleeping now"

It took another 20 minutes before he realised she was suggesting a new mattress for their flat !
