PM urging for whereabouts of contaminated rice producers

BANGKOK, 16 July 2013 (NNT) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has urged those who know the whereabouts of manufacturers of sub-standard rice to report to the police while expressing her hope for the end of negative rumors about the quality of Thai rice.

Ms. Yingluck said although there might have been a few errors in the production of rice at some rice mills and packaging plants, people should not believe rumors and jump into conclusion that Thai rice as a whole is contaminated.

The Prime Minister asked every sector to help restore the confidence in Thai rice and urged the media to be fair in presenting news in order to avoid damaging Thailand’s reputation as the producer of high-quality rice.

The premier stressed that there will be legal consequences for those starting rumors. As for the discovery of rotten rice by the Opposition, she said the government needs to take some time to investigate the matter.

I wonder if it ever occur to her that if she is going to stock pile years of rice production she would need constant checks on it's quality.

This would also greatly facilitate her ability to set up a committee to investigate these informers.

"Ms. Yingluck said although there might have been a few errors in the production of rice at some rice mills and packaging plants, people should not believe rumors and jump into conclusion that Thai rice as a whole is contaminated."

I think the horse is out of the barn. On her next secret Government to Government deal she should throw in the stipulation that they can not mention part of the rice was useless.

The premier stressed that there will be legal consequences for those starting rumors. As for the discovery of rotten rice by the Opposition, she said the government needs to take some time to investigate the matter.

I guess that lets us off the hook we are not starting them we are just passing them on.

PM Yingluck, you are the person in charge, you will be the one held responsible. Your administrators said that all the warehouses were inspected and inventoried, so why not ask your administrators. You can hold them accountable for their actions, but you are responsible. President Harry Truman said. "The buck stops with me." The ball is in your court, play the ball or get off the field. You must be able to rise above, and show the citizens of Thailand that you are their PM, hot the PM of special interest groups and individuals. wai.gif

But that would risk upsetting her brother's "eternal friend", and restarting the border-temple problem, perhaps blame the Dems or Abhisit & Suthep instead ? wink.png

It sounds like is Yingy saying that only some Thai rice is contaminated, so we should stop being such babies and just take our chances that the bag we buy won't be some nasty stuff. And if anybody says another bad thing about the over-priced, corruption-riddled rice situation of Thailand, they will face serious punishment. After all, big brother didn't strip Thailand of billions of dollars of ill-gotten gains just so she could be disrespected.

These people are just stumbling around and have no idea what is going on or how to fix the problem. There is no contamination in the rice, there is minor contamination in the rice, anyone who mentions the contamination will be shackled and quartered and tell us who has contaminated our rice.

The Government has destroyed Thailand's N# 1 rice producer/exporter status and it is going to take a few years to claw it back. If they continue down this path of denial and deceit it will take decades. It is time to stop the finger pointing and being obsessed with face and get to work on the problem. You can't sell the rice because buyers don't want it as it is to expensive, rotting and contaminated. Find an alternate use for the rice and them start completely fresh with new high quality stock without the scams and get rich quick schemes.

You have your own people (Thai's) saying that the Cadmium Contaminated Rice can be converted into rice oil which is suitable for human consumption and other uses. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/03601234.2013.795835#.UeS4go9-_IU

The finding regarding lead in rice was retracted:

off-topic; that natural news site is garbage. the guy who runs it is a fearmongering lackey for Alex Jones and Company

Anything to stop the truth getting out, losing face or slowing down the revenue streams.

Actually facing up to and resolving the problems - not even on the radar. No gain, no interest. Much easier to lie, threaten and coerze.

What problems? Strong baht, economc growth and the rich getting massively richer. Policies seem to be working just fine.

I'm sure Thailand's competitors in the international rice supply markets won't be slow to talk about this, and dare I say, add embelishments. Unfortunately, they can't be gagged. Stopping people commenting at home isn't going to influence the international perception one iota. It just makes it look more sure there is something to hide. Too arrogant, stubborn and stupid to see.

Well, she could go to Pattaya and take some balcony diving lessons..that would be a tremendous start!

Quite clearly this fiasco calls for the resignation of the Chair of the National Rice Policy Committee.

The PM should sack this person and remove them to an inactive post immediately for the sake of the country, no matter how well connected they are.
