How to change movie Aspect Ratio?

Featured Replies

So I downloaded this movie and all the characters are tall and skinny. blink.png

Changing the Aspect Ratio to 2.21-1 on VLC Player makes it seem about right.

That's all well and good but can't save the setting with VLC Player.coffee1.gif

Googling says that by running the movie through a converter you can change the aspect ratio.

Attempting to change the ratio by using a couple of free Video Converters I get the choice of "HD720p 1280x720" - "HD1080p 1920x1080" etc. or "5.4" - "4.3" - "16.9" - "3.2".

As you will note none of these choices are anything like the "2.21-1" that gave me the right Aspect Ratio on VLC Player. w00t.gif

Is there a conversion table or something that will tell me what setting I should use to get the "2.21-1" Aspect Ratio that I need.

Thank you all

Why don't you download a proper version?

You can correct aspect size with freemake video converter.

The advanced settings accept custom values for height and width

I use avidemux for all video conversions, but I don't know if they have a windows version

Then I wouldn't learn anything and where's the fun in that?

Yes I know a video converter can be set to change the Aspect Ratio, in fact I did use Freemake, but the question is which setting should I use to get the "2.21-1" that works with VLC Player?

A few questions first. What is the original size of the video, what format is it in, and what destination format do you desire?

for example select "convert to AVI"

then a window opens where you can choose an output profile. just below these profiles there is an icon looking like a blue cog. click that one and input your parameters manually.

Thanks everybody for you help but with some more intense Googling managed to sort it out myself.

Found a program called "MPEG4 Modifier" http://www.moitah.net/#MPEG4Modifier which changes the Aspect Ratio without Re-Encoding so all done in a couple of minutes biggrin.png

Hi Daffy,

Glad to hear you sorted it.

A really really good media player is Potplayer.

This player is updated very regularly (a few times a month or more) and the settings that it gives you are more than enough. For example if the audio synch is out, you can adjust it till it's spot on; you can resume watching a video from the last played point; and under video/pan & scan there's a multitude of options that adjust the picture format so that it looks right on a PC/TV.

Take a look if you like. It's reviewed here :-

and you can download it here :-

Thanks Rigsby

I use VLC Player which I'm well happy with but I'm always ready to try something new so will give Potplayer a go.

Trouble with media players, including VLC Player, is you can't save any changes which does not help when wanting to watch a movie on the TV.

I'm not sure about this, but I think VLC will remember settings for videos located in the same folder.
