PHUKET: -- A Russian woman was badly hurt when she lost control of the car she was driving and smashed into a shop in Patong at 4am today (October 8).

Kathu police named the injured woman as Elena Nikholas, 30, and said she was driving the white Toyota Vios that smashed into a souvenir shop on Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd.

Two other people in the car escaped uninjured. Police believe Ms Nikholas may have fallen asleep at the wheel. She was taken to Patong Hospital.

It's pretty funny that the accident appears to have happened at a better part of the road. It's currently cut into a number of sections where they are constructing parts of the "new" road. It's good that it's concrete but the foundation is mud and I can see erosion, insidious unseen erosion, eating away over the next few years until somethings got to give, but I digress. That part of the road has good lighting and is sealed at the edges, so it must have taken some effort to lose control.

Or after successfully maneuvering the bad stretch she decided to accelerate once she (thought) she could.
