Promenada Mall Hours Of Operation

We (2 of us) were at the Rimping Oyster Bar in the Promenada Mall, having just ordered a nice bottle of wine and 3 types of oysters totaling 18 pieces, we were just beginning to pour the ripple when I heard the air conditioning go off:

I said to the oyster shucker guy, "why did they turn the air conditioning off",

he said "we are closing",

I said "no way, really?" "but we have just ordered and the cost is about 7500THB"

He said "Promenada Mall policy"

I'm a little confused, why would a mall that has very few retail shops, yet has a million coffee shops and restaurants of all kinds and a movie theatre have hours of operation from 11:00 to 21:00, is it just me or do other people find this strange as well?

I actually don't find it odd. Malls close early, including the restaurants. I guess unless the restaurant has an entrance from the outside and doesn't seem connected to the mall.

Funny, but we were there last night looking for a restaurant at 9pm, and everything was closed or closing. I wasn't surprised. But I was still disappointed. I had a hot dog at the theatre instead.

I'm more interested in why a restaurant would let someone order a large expensive meal before informing them of the soon-to-be closed doors. Unless they would allow you to sit for two hours while they clean up. But it certainly isn't fun to do.

Well now that you mention it so did I, actually I commented on it and they just blew me off, as if it really didn't matter, however they did bring the bill at 20:35 and stood there beside our just started meal until I stopped eating and paid it.

Something else really stupid but in the morning before 11am mall opening. Rimping opens early, 8 or 9am, so you go to the car park underneath where Rimping is.....but then you find that all of the doors to enter that building, apart from one, tucked away in a corner, are chained and bolted until 11am!! All the main door entrances, the obvious ones, from the car park, the ones you automatically walk to, where the escalators are, are closed!!

First time I went, me and another foreign guy had to puzzle it out.....got there in the end, but surely if the main store inside the building opens at 8am, shouldnt the main entrance doors also open at the same time......or is that way too logical!!!!!

most are are too lazy to want the extra hour of trading and most Thais don't like going out early shopping. so well-suited to the way things normally are.

personally i don't think the Dutch have a clue as to how to do business in Thailand. what the deal with the radio spots in English or the billboards in English? who do they think they are targeting? what audience? i was in a coffee shop about a week ago and suddenly a radio spot came on for Promenada - but in English! i heard Thais at 2 nearby tables say "why is this in English?" i mean this is Thailand.

i have noticed that in the last week or so the billboards have begun to include Thai script so someone must have woken them up.

I don't get it, besides all the Cattle that you can't even sit on to get a photo opportunity what exactly did the mall contribute? What is the new concept? Close at 21:00 and don't sit on the Cows???

Wine Connection: The place was empty, again, but it has some potential for sure, could use more Champagne, what they have for a selection is very limited, had the cheese plate and 2 bottles of sparkling Rose, not bad and Pat the waiter spoke great English. I was told a story by there staff that the Promenada Security locks the washrooms up at 21:00 and their customers have no place to relieve themselves, bizarre or that? Wow

Fuji: Chain Japanese food, same as everywhere, yet air conditioning barely works and it's way to HOT!

Well, 10 out of 10 for perseverence, but if I wanted to eat out, the last place I would go would be a shopping mall. Why not try a real restaurant located in its own property?

a shopping mall would be the last place i too, would go out for a meal. i say wine connection will be one of the first to fold over there. perhaps not the retail wine shop but the restaurant. some of the coffee shops as well. i mean 2 or 3 is more than enough for the business there. how many people are buying furniture for 188,000.00 Bahts for a dresser? those shops are sure to fail.

Well nothing unusual about the hours. Airport Tops opens at 10:00 The Mall 11:00 they both close at 9:00 but they have movies that run past that time. Not sure about Promenada but the airport occasionally will have movies that start at 10:30 and some at 11:00. Not sure how you get in for those.

Can't say for sure as they are not completed yet. The ice rink and child care also the stage are different. Have to wait for them to be completed before making a judgement. The original plans showed the outside area to be some what park like. I know there is a Dukes going in there due to be open any day now. You will not find the service there you do eating oysters.

Another thing that I would find unique in a shopping mall here in Chiang Mai is a store selling a 188,000 baht piece of furniture some one mentioned here. Give it time a lot of the coffee stands will disappear and some of the shops will change. Just because a mall opens it's doors dosen't mean every thing is already perfect. That goes for any country. TIT is for people who know nothing of the out side world.

Also there will be a quality Italian restaurant opening there. That is still in the planning stages by an established respected business man here in Chiang Mai. Nothing has been committed yet.

That being said I agree it is not what it was promoted to be several years ago. Hopefully it will get there. If you are looking for perfection go to heaven. Short of that you are going to be disappointed

Ummmmm, I have also enjoyed the movie theater there, but they don't butter the popcorn, just as well as I'm over weight and then the seats would be covered in it, just an old memory from when I was a kid.

• Ginger Shop/Nomad (House restaurant parking lot), ever seen the prices there 55555555 188,000 Baht for a painting I can buy or have commissioned in Kad Saen Keaw for 10,000 Baht, let alone the prices on the furniture, but I've been told they are antiques (not sure about the Vetting process), they had a small horse like rocker there for 45,000 Baht and I saw one not unlike it in Hang Dong.....

Amazing, I've been here forever (feels like) and never knew that, but 1 night whilst on the way home I ran into a Philippine guy, long hair said he sang in a mall, maybe he's one of them.

Had to go to Promenada to meet a friend today. Was in the same building as Rimping, and noted that if you stand in the middle of that oval shaped building, literally within a stones throw (I didnt throw any!) there are FOUR pharmacy type shops, THREE opticians, and at least half a dozen coffee shops.

Now I know nothing about the marketting strategy inside a mall, but surely, it cant be good business for the exact same retailers to be quite literally next door to each other?! There are two competing pharmacies next to each other, and two more also next to each other about 50 metres away. There are two opticians literally next to each other, and another one 50 metres away. Coffee shops? There are so many next to each other, then if you go upstairs, there are almost as many again, and most are empty of customers!!

Its the retailers I feel sorry for, the rents in Promenada will be very high, and to have so many virtually identical specialist shops right next to each other seems like retail suicide. Didnt the mall owners have any design input to prevent this type of thing, or is it just, take who you can and put them wherever they want to be? Of course, clothes shops next to each other, as in Airport Plaza, doesnt present the same problem as each is selling different types of fashion items, and thus they arent the same.

Right now I fear for the future of Promenada and the people who are shelling out for high rents, with so much competition about to open around the City, and with the other problem of very limited car parking at Promenada too!!

PP totally agree. Promenada has all the hallmarks of a massive mistake ,poor location, poor parking,difficulty in attracting quality ,well cashed up, tenants and the only saving grace that may see its survival is the developers probably have deep pockets,there's always a new retailer willing to have a go and then end up in tears.Its the sort of place you go through curiosity and then decide that its not really worth the effort to go back. In the 5 years we have been here in CM I would say, at a conservative estimate, the number of coffee outlets you could multiple by 10.
